A session that will go down in infamy.
Galaxy Johnson, the strange and wonderful alien Elf, slain by a real buildup of mishaps and not-so-good ideas. Alas.
Also this is an absolute fucking novella of a recap. Perhaps fitting, since the world's most prolific writer of paperback erotica has died.
"Literary giant and noted 4 Dimensional artist Galaxy Johnson was found dead in unusual, but entirely expected, circumstances today. He is survived by his adventuring party, and an indeterminite number of stepchildren. The body of an unidentified coalminer was also found at the scene"
- Timothy sends a eulogy from the local paper.
Alright here goes ---

Campaign Date:
Monday, 8 April, 1601
Moon Phase: Third Quarter

- Dumbledorris was told to do something illegal - steal from the demons - and went through with it! Of course it did lead to her death and weird demonic rebirth, so it kind of worked out. (+1 to hit soldiers, guards, and other agents of law and order.)
- The Spider-Kids successfully hid from the crystal dragon form of Christina Breaker when she was hunting for them in the dark depths of the earth.. (+1 Stealth)

Events:
--- Cold Fire
- It’s a fine spring morning in the ruins of Pembrooktonshire. Pale flame still flickers amongst the wreckage, drawing Styx’s very great interest. (50 exp)
- He approaches one of the flickering fires and finds that it burns with an intense cold but does not consume the wood. His black dragon worshipper goblin sees it as highly entropic. (50 exp)
- Some shenanigans follow, testing the fire and what will hold it. A barrel is lost during testing, but POWERLAD uses his stoneshaping rune magic to create a stone box that seems to work alright. (50 exp)
- As the party set off on the Guber and crest the rise out of Pembrooktonshire, they have a good view out across the land. The Black Sun bleeds on the horizon. Cancerous tentacles writhe over the dying landscape. The huge angels in the sky spin and sing in their deep voices. (50 exp)
--- The Demonhunters

--- The Demonhunters
- The road is pitted and potholed and choked with fallen rocks, clumps of dead vegetation and the occasional dead emaciated goat, but the Guber hovers easily above it all. Dumbledorris grabs that goat though. Waste not want not! (50 exp)
- After a few hours there’s movement ahead. A scratch-built camp around a small cave slightly up the scree, with an oilcloth awning to keep off the rain fluttering in the breeze. (50 exp)
- POWERLAD wants to investigate so Styx slows the Guber. Ratimir sends in a scouting swarm of rats which scurry up the slope towards the cave mouth. The quiet is broken by an echoing scream - “RATS! EW!” (50 exp)
- A woman wielding a broom to smack rats away from the entrance appears, sees the motley bunch of people on the Guber, and suddenly stops slack-jawed. (50 exp)
- Galaxy Johnson swiftly activates his cold iron cufflinks and becomes Coalminer Dan! The only person who looks like a pure human on this wagon! He offers food to the woman, and she lets him walk up the scree to the camp. (50 exp)
- Slightly deeper into the cave, light glimmers off the end of the barrel of a gun. A voice growls out to not try anything funny. Dan notices the dull glint of an iron dagger at the woman’s hip. (50 exp)
- It turns out that these guys are Termaxian demon hunters, hunting demons for their obols and hoping to get together enough of the little demon imp things to make demon masks for later sale. (50 exp)
- Dan gives them a recipe for char-grilled tentacle, it helps with the flavour, and they offer him some silver bullets in exchange but he turns them down. (50 exp)
- On hearing that the party’s goal is Dwimmermount, they warn Dan that the place is swarming with angels. They usually don’t attack folks unless attacked themselves, but best not to risk it. (50 exp)
- As Dan leaves he reverts to Galaxy Johnson, to cries of shock from the demon hunters! A shot rings out over his head as he runs back to the Guber. Shouts of “hey don’t be prejudiced!” fall on uncaring ears. (50 exp)
--- Imp Harvest
- Soon the car arrives at the village of Mingol. Once that cool place run by a demon magistrate where you had to wear gold spectacles, the place is a mess now. Small rat-sized multicoloured demon things giggle and jabber from rooftops, nobody is walking on the streets. (50 exp)
- Galaxy Johnson considers getting the group to stop while he gathers up some imps, those demon hunters told him the masks you make from them are valuable, but the Guber drives on… (50 exp)
- Until POWERLAD hears a woman shout out from a window, “pleease brave people! Our children are being stolen! It’s Satanist work I tells ya!”. POWERLAD goes into hero mode! He’d better see what she’s on about! (50 exp)
- She tells POWERLAD that the village’s men and children have been disappearing. It all started when a star fell from the sky a few weeks ago. Then the last of their animals started disappearing, then the kids, now the men! And these little demon things are everywhere! (50 exp)
- It must be something to do with the old satanic temple up in the mountains. She’s sure of it! (50 exp)
- Meanwhile, Galaxy Johnson grabs a sack and climbs up onto the rooftops. There are tons of these little imp things! They come in seven colours and each colour has a different exaggerated bodypart. Definitely sins. (50 exp)
- He grabs a black Lust imp (no surprises which body part is exaggerated there) and chucks it in the bag… only to discover that he’s drawn the ire of all the imps on the rooftops! (50 exp)
- They swarm towards him in a great multicoloured flock, so Galaxy Johnson dives down the nearest chimney! His elf-born climbing prowess let him reach the ground floor with no injuries. Phew! (50 exp)
- Behind him, the little demons begin dropping down the chimney in pursuit. Galaxy puts his sack over the mouth of the chimney and begins collecting them as they fall down into the bag! But unfortunately their little sharp claws begin tearing the bag open... (50 exp)

- Galaxy wraps a rope around the bag in the hopes of keeping them all in, but swarms of the little things keep pouring out of the top! (50 exp)
- Suddenly a whole bunch of spiders swarm in through the window! It’s the Spider-Kids! Galaxy just about manages to get the end of the imp sack closed as the spiders swarm in to help! (50 exp)
- Suddenly a whole bunch of spiders swarm in through the window! It’s the Spider-Kids! Galaxy just about manages to get the end of the imp sack closed as the spiders swarm in to help! (50 exp)
- POWERLAD hears the commotion and rushes in, punching at the swarms of little people! It’s somewhat effective. (50 exp)
- Galaxy is getting gnawed on by these god damn imps while he tries to tie the bag up tight. They’re clearly going for different bits of him - black ones going for the groin, red ones for his fists, it’s awful! (50 exp)
- He finally gets it closed and knotted tight as POWERLAD and the Spider-Kids finish of the last of the escaped swarms. The Spider-Kids, having eaten a fair few of the black lust imps, have developed some confusing urges. (50 exp)
- Outside, ignoring the sounds of desperate battle, Dumbledorris has been using some of the curried goat she made on the way to tempt forward some gluttony imps. She baits them in little by little. (50 exp)
- Across the way, on a rooftop, Styx is utilising a hyperefficient combination of goblin minions and runes to sweep all the little imps on the rooftops through a perfect rune-powered funnel into a bunch of barrels! (50 exp)
- Dumbledorris, happily looking up from her bag of seven carefully baited gluttony imps, is somewhat taken aback to find that Styx managed to clear the rest of the imps from the entire village. (50 exp)

- Galaxy Johnson stumbles out of the house covered in tiny bites and scratches, sackful of imps in hand. That went ok! (50 exp)
- Knowing that the next step to making these little guys into masks is to drown them in water from the river Lethe, it looks like the party’s next stop is the Twinned Cities Edge & Dwarrow. (50 exp)
- POWERLAD needs to heroically SAVE THE KIDS though! He and Andromeda split off to investigate the satanic temple up the mountain. Because that’s what heroes do. (50 exp)
--- POWERLAD and the Satanic Temple
- As they wave to the Guber drives off, Andromeda asks POWERLAD a burning question - “What does Bertha have that I don’t?” (50 exp)
- POWERLAD equivocates a little before admitting that he likes Bertha AND Andromeda. Spicy character drama! It’s just he’s married to Bertha, you know? And is Andromeda only into him because he killed himself from an alternate timeline in front of her? (50 exp)
- Andromeda’s all “you moron, that’s not the only reason I like you” and they start off up the track towards the temple having a proper D&M. Andromeda accepts POWERLAD’s offer of induction into the cult of Ninhursag too, feeling her bond to Ereshkigal slipping further as she does so. (50 exp)
- After some time they climb the crumbling stone steps and reach the entrance to the Satanic Temple. Two rad as hell goat statues rear on either side of an altar. The door behind is covered in pentagrams and demonic symbolism. (50 exp)
- On the altar itself rests a book entitled “Charting the Heavens”. It looks like it’s only been placed here in the last couple of hours. On the cover, held down by a rock, is a handwritten letter from Gifflewim! (50 exp)
- POWERLAD reads it but decides to go in anyway, Andromeda following warily behind. The door sticks a little but opens easily. Shallow stairs lead down into a circular room with a statue of a toned man with a goat’s head. (50 exp)
- The eyes of the goatman are hollow, and inspection shows that there’s a place inside the hollow head to place a candle. The statue jostles slightly as POWERLAD checks it out. (50 exp)
- He pours a little oil into the statue’s head and lights it. The light shines out through the eyes, illuminating two sections of wall on either side of the chamber! (50 exp)
- Further investigation reveals that these sections of wall are hidden doors! How thrilling! They open to reveal low tunnels you have to crawl through. Both lead to wells with handholds leading down… (50 exp)
- Maybe later. POWERLAD goes to jostle the statue some more. Leaning it back causes the wall behind it to open out into a pentagram shape! Stale air gusts from the chamber beyond. (50 exp)
- It’s some sort of shrine. A fairly wide pit divides the room. There are even holes along the walls. It looks like you could level some panels down to cover the pit and allow egress, but that doesn’t matter because POWERLAD can fly! (50 exp)
- Andromeda doesn’t have a good feeling about this, but POWERLAD mansplains her into not worrying too much about it and they swoop over the pit anyway. It’s fine! POWERLAD is justified.(50 exp)
- They reach the other side and find an altar with a leatherbound book on it. It’s got the now-familiar symbol of Duvan’Ku on the front, but POWERLAD can’t read the Duvan’Ku script. (50 exp)
- Considering they’ve been down in this spoOoOOoOky place for long enough and found a few things, they decide to leave and wait for backup. They’ve been lucky so far, but for how long? (50 exp)
- They exit the Satanic Temple for now, scratching at numerous bites from the irritating insects, but otherwise pretty fine! Hopefully everyone else who took the Guber is safe! (50 exp)
--- The Ride North
- Several hours earlier, the rest of the party watch POWERLAD and Andromeda waving them goodbye as the Guber drives off. Onwards! To the river Lethe! (50 exp)
- The road here is a little better than the route through the mountains. The Guber hovers over the rutted cart tracks, leaving a long splashy divot in the dirt behind. The grass is dead, tentacles squirm over dying trees, god beams streak down on the horizon. (50 exp)
- And as the mountains reduce down into rolling foothills, a strange sight greets the party’s eyes - the Black Sun bleeds! Thick strands of black spill from the great orb, as if an obscene bleeding eye rises over the Twinned Cities. (50 exp)
- As they drive further, passing through a gap between two large hills, they spot a man with a pistol in one hand dragging a body behind him along the verge. At the sight of the Guber he dives into the dying brush at the side of the road! (50 exp)
- Styx couldn’t care less so keeps driving on, but the Spider-Kids trailing behind the Guber on their web parachutes decide to check it out! They let go of their webs and land lightly on the road. (50 exp)

--- The Spider-Kids offer legal aid
- As the Guber drives off, leaving another group behind, the spiders crawl up to talk to the guy. A gunshot rings out, missing completely, and the guy swears loudly! (50 exp)
- He scrambles up the slope of the hill, managing to get up to a dead tree that has an ok view of the road below. Seeing that there are a whole bunch of spiders, and realising that spiders are known for their climbing ability, he gives up. (50 exp)
- “Hey our dad’s a lawyer! He can help with this corpse!” says one of the spiders, and he looks at them in shock. “You can talk?!” (50 exp)
- He tells them he’s been out here hunting demons for their obols. They’re valuable enough to make it worthwhile. The corpse he was dragging is a demon, see. There’s an obol in it. He’ll let the spiders have it if they leave him alone. (50 exp)

- They tell him that they’re children of POWERLAD but he straight up doesn’t believe them. Whatever. The Spider-Kids have seen enough, so they begin the long crawl north to catch up with the Guber. (50 exp)
--- A Rival Drakencult
- Styx, Dumbledorris, and Galaxy Johnson remain in the Guber, speeding up slightly now that the Spider-Kids have jumped off. (50 exp)
- They soon approach the village of Gullet, the just a mile or so from the walls of the Twinned Cities. As they get closer they see blue-green goblins walking around. Some even have wings! (50 exp)
- Styx slows the Guber. What a gift! Followers of the blue dragon? Here? (50 exp)
- A winged hobgoblin glides alongside the moving vehicle, telling them to move along. This village is under their protection. (50 exp)
- It’s a small matter of pleasantries, light trading, and discussion about the effectiveness of runes to get the hobgoblin to induct Bones, on of Styx’s minions, into the Cult of Mardük. (50 exp)

--- The Twinned Cities
- The Guber continues on towards Edge and Dwarrow. Ratimir jumps off to go have dinner with his dad or something. It’s just Styx, Dumbledorris, and Galaxy Johnson now. (50 exp)
- They soon come to the long road into the Twinned Cities. There are two huge gates side by side, one for Edge and one for Dwarrow. (50 exp)
- Galaxy Johnson runs towards the gates, picking his way between the fallen ropes that marked where queues were meant to line up. Only the Dwarrow gate is open though. (50 exp)
- Styx takes the Guber in through the larger door for carts. Inside there’s a large space divided by a row of booths, like a passport gate. Only one booth is manned, and the man inside it seems alarmed to have visitors. (50 exp)
- He sees that they’re visitors and gives them the full rundown. Edge and Dwarrow are two different cities occupying the same physical space. The trick is to only interact with one city while pretending that the other isn’t there. (50 exp)
- He admits that this sounds silly, but it worked didn’t it? Edge was invaded by demons, but they didn’t manage to invade Dwarrow. So long as you don’t Breach by interacting with Edge and the demons that infest it in any way, you’ll be safe. (50 exp)
- To help with this, he’s got orange-tinted goggles for everyone to wear. They’ll help you interact only with Dwarrow where reds and yellows are common. Avoid purples and blues, they’ll show up black through the tinted goggles. Purples and blues are Edge colours. (50 exp)
- He reiterates - do not interact with the demons. Don’t even mention them. You’re from out of town, you’re close enough to Breaching as it is. If you Breach you’ll let the demons through into Dwarrow, or worse, destroy the metaconceptual barrier between the city & the city. (50 exp)
--- The Mean Streets of Dwarrow
- Nevertheless, he lets them through. Styx drives them on, through the Dwarrow city streets towards the river. They get closer and see a few people with orange sashes nonchalantly standing near the river, which comes up black through the goggles. (50 exp)
- Half-formed demonic blobs flop and squirm along the bank. Occasionally when it’s been quiet for a while someone will run to fill a jar from the river, then stand looking around pretending like nothing happened. (50 exp)
- Galaxy Johnson hails one such man, who looks scared before he sees the orange goggles. They chat for a bit, the guy making very big “so what brings you to this very lovely city of Dwarrow that we are both in right now?” statements. (50 exp)
- Galaxy says “oh just looking to dip these little sin gnomes in the river over there to turn them into demon masks”. (50 exp)
- The guy goes “What the fuck are you doing?!” and runs off as fast as he can. (50 exp)
- A whole horde of fucked up half-formed clay blobs burst from the river, racing on multiple arms and legs straight towards Galaxy Johnson! Amorphous yawning maws, flailing semi-solid limbs, screaming gurgling screams from malformed throats, all coming straight for him! (50 exp)
- Galaxy Johnson takes off at a dead sprint, letting his sack of sin gnomes thump to the floor behind him. He races off along the main road, the demons howling along behind him.

(50 exp)
--- A good ol’ game of roll-the-barrel
- Styx and Dumbledorris pretend not to notice. They stand there whistling and looking around like nothing’s wrong as the horrors rush part around them like rocks in a stream, tearing off after the little grey man. (50 exp)
- When the danger has passed, they make very pointed idle chitchat about that famous childhood game “roll the barrel” where you just roll an ordinary barrel down an ordinary street and pull it back with ordinary ropes. Great game! (50 exp)
- They play this cool game with a barrel near the edge of the river that totally doesn’t exist. They carefully refrain from mentioning the squeals of the little demon gnomes trapped in said barrel as it rolls into the river and fills with Lethe water. (50 exp)
- The barrel comes back with a bunch of masks banging around inside it, although of course they don’t remark on that. Just a good ol’ standard game of roll the barrel. (50 exp)
- Styx picks up a fallen bag that has fallen on the road. Potentially it belonged to Galaxy Johnson and contains a bunch of squealing imps, but Styx doesn’t say anything about that. It’s just a bag he found. Totally normal lost property. (50 exp)
- They play roll-the-barrel again to fill another barrel with nothing. What a fun game. Dumbledorris and Styx are pooped after all this barrel-rolling fun they’ve been having, so they load up the Guber again and drive it back to the entrance, empty barrels sloshing around, not mentioning Galaxy Johnson but hoping he’ll turn up on the way. (50 exp)
--- Galaxy Johnson
- Galaxy Johnson is sprinting down unfamiliar alleys. He doesn’t care which city he’s running through, now in Edge, now in Dwarrow, now somewhere in between. It’s a hard run. A desperate run. The demons are closing in. (50 exp)
- There’s movement on the rooftops, not that he notices. Dark figures in crow-beaked masks sign to each other with furtive hand signals, dull sunlight glinting off grim grey gunmetal as they follow the chase from above. (50 exp)
- Galaxy takes one turn after another, grey feet pattering against the flagstones. He turns another corner and, horrifically, sees the horde of half-formed demons bearing down towards him! (50 exp)
- He skids to a halt, turns, and pelts the other way. They scream and roar from part-formed throats, growing louder and closer, until he’s knocked off his feet by a broken clay claw and goes sprawling! (50 exp)
- He rolls, threads of elfin gossamer whirling with him, and hops back up onto his feet. The demons slow. They’ve got him. Galaxy Johnson backs up and desperately glances around, black eyes behind orange goggles. (50 exp)
- There! An orange door! A house that’s in Dwarrow! (50 exp)
- He turns and runs again, sprinting straight for the orange door. From the rooftops he hears the cracks of gunshots and yells of “breach breach breach!”. The demon that’s right behind him drops and splashes to the ground in a puddle of bloody clay, the one behind it jumping over its fallen body! (50 exp)
- Galaxy bursts through the orange door, slams it behind him, and puts his back against it. That was a close one! (50 exp)
- With a sigh of relief he sits with his back against the door and reaches into his bag to grab a well-earned tentacle jerky snack. (50 exp)

- Phew! (50 exp)
- Windows shatter. Something massive slams into the door from the outside, throwing the door off its hinges, throwing Galaxy Johnson away from the door. (50 exp)
--- Slo-Mo
- Galaxy is midair, thrown forward by the sheer impact against the door. A fleshy mass of demon picks itself up from the ground. Another demon is leaping over the it, extruding claws in midair, seeking Galaxy’s throat. (50 exp)
- The windows are blown in by leaping protoplasmic forms, legs extended, claws grabbing, glass embedded in their flesh. (50 exp)
- The piece of jerky Galaxy was going to snack on spins calmly away from his hand, barely nibbled. (50 exp)
- Somewhere inside Galaxy’s mind, Daniel Johnson hears the voice he’s heard so many times before. “You can have your body back, I’m done with it”. (50 exp)
- Galaxy Johnson presses his cold iron cufflinks into his wrists… and is gone. (50 exp)
--- Coalminer Dan
- Coalminer Dan emerges into consciousness, lying on the floor. He picks himself up and dusts himself off, finally himself again after all these years! He can’t feel Galaxy at all! He’s free! (50 exp)
- Pain blossoms. Something sharp rakes down his back, grating along his spine. Teeth close on his shoulder, biting deep. He screams in pain and confusion. (50 exp)
- The teeth pull back, tearing a chunk of his flesh from his shoulder. Blood sprays grotesquely from the wound, but he can’t pull away. There’s an impact to his side, the floor coming up to meet him. He bounces, rolls face up, consciousness fading. (50 exp)
- His first view of them is the last thing he ever sees. Half-formed faces bubbling from black-veined red clay. Extrusions forming and re-forming into limbs and claws and teeth. As his consciousness ebbs away, a single thought remains. (50 exp)

why
--- Outside the Cities
- The Guber idles in the road outside the cities, a single goblin maintaining the Repel Mass rune that keeps the thing afloat. Galaxy Johnson still hasn’t turned up. Styx and Dumbledorris are grabbing the demon masks from the barrels and sorting them by sin. (50 exp)
- Ratimir turns up again and asks them what the situation is. (50 exp)
- “Galaxy Johnson’s probably dead”, says Styx. Ratimir is appalled. (50 exp)
- His arrival is followed closely by the Spider-Kids who’ve finally made it all the way back to the Guber by spidery foot. With them is an old acquaintance - Zena! Last seen before the apocalypse was triggered, she’s back! (50 exp)
- The Spider-Kids volunteer to head into the cities to find Galaxy, or at the very least his body. If he’s dead they need to give him a proper burial and Arach-Nacha’s obol is still on him, and as their birth mother that’s pretty important. (50 exp)
- The rest of the party get on the Guber and head back down south to find POWERLAD and Andromeda. The mission to get water from the river Lethe was technically successful. But at what cost? (50 exp)

Wow. probably the biggest death since I've been reading. Andromeda was a big deal too, but by the point I picked up the tale, she was only with the party half the time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a stupid and horrible way to die.
Yea big stuff! Poor dude!
DeleteI was all "Oh thank god he's in a house I can justify giving him time to cast a spell to escape"... and then he decided to chill out and eat some food.
Tragic, but his fault I feel!
