Session 63 - Tongue Tied

Apologies for the delay... I may have overdone it on the actual recap.
Oh well!

For James - Your Elf's heartspell is Mending which means you are turning into a Gremling. Your Elf species' florid description is as follows -
"Diminutive borrowers of toys and intricate things, petty breakers of tools left too long in forgotten drawers. Spirits of the unfinished task, cut short by the bent nail or the wrong screwdriver. Mischief achieved they make amends by mending what they had broken, and sometimes more besides. Many a broken marriage has been mended by the ministrations of a Gremling, forecasted by unexpected annoyance and woe"
With two spells in your head, you have pointy elf ears (granting 2-in-6 Search skill) and squinty rat-like eyes (which makes all your equipment count as Quality 1 - the highest quality - no matter how crap it really is).

For all - you (mostly) survived the horrible haunted house, and made an absolute stack of cash. Everyone who survived leveled up, so well done!

I'd better get on with other stuff, so see you all next week!

Session 63 - Tongue Tied

Campaign Date:
Market Day, 15 October, 1549

- An Elf whose heartspell is Mending, appropriately has a job as a Tinker
- Jumarak, a Muscle Wizard and trapper who once befriended the badger whose skin he now wears

Enemies Defeated:- Erasmus "Spiderdick" Foxlowe, stabbed in the urethra (25 exp)
- Myrna "Foetal Fantasy" Foxlowe, killed by grappling hook to head before attached foetus slain (25 exp)
- Sabrina "Crotch-Stinger" Newguard, insect punched off back, killing host (25 exp)
- Penelope "Granny" Foxlowe, eventually taken down by dogs and a swinging now-rearranged Dwarf (1500 exp)
Total: 1575 exp

Treasure and Equipment:
- 2 wheellock pistols, standard quality (350 exp)
- Variety of deeds and stocks worth a boatload of cash.
- 4 violins (200 exp)
- 3 small figurines of strange workmanship (750 exp)
- 1500cp, 1925sp, 600*gp (33725 exp)
- 10 gold bars (10000 exp)
- 10000sp-worth of fine jewellery (10000 exp)
- A particularly fine necklace (2500 exp)
Total: 57525 exp

Exploration:
- Explored 7 more rooms of the Bloodworth Manor (140 exp)
Total: 140 exp

Events:
- John Doe, Stabbington Shanks and Zea are in trouble. Variously jizz-webbed, burnt, and otherwise stuck to things, they eventually triumph when Stabbington shanks Erasmus in the dick. The bug possessing him fades away. (50 exp)
- Outside, lots of people are showing up and seem surprisingly ok about all the blood and the chandelier girl. (50 exp)
- Alice begins trying to lock-pick the safe in the Study, while John Doe tries to pull it out of the wall with his grappling hook leg. Other people loot the room, finding hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stocks and deeds. (50 exp)
- The door opposite the study is opened and the family's music room is found. Body stuffed up chimney discovered after lighting fireplace from appropriate distance. Violins and odd statuettes looted, harpsichord earmarked for later removal. (50 exp)
- Alice pops the safe, finding fungible assets worth an absolute ton. On counting, there seem to be slightly fewer coins than one might assume from an initial glance (50 exp)
- Party travels upstairs in single file, opens door on right, discovers nicely appointed guest room. Mattress goes all bloody when laid upon due to skinned corpse in mattress. (50 exp)
- Sobbing child heard behind opposite door, child yet lives despite having been twisted into a horrid parody of the Vitruvian Man. Child's brain and eyes have been separated from body, child's tongue and genitals in a strange symbol drawn in faeces. Alice attempts to loot brain, ruins everything. (50 exp)
- Genitals and tongue burst to life, genitals burrow into Jumarak's arm, tongue begins tongue-wrestling Alice. Alice fiercely tongue-wrestles the tongue until she manages to swallow it, another great decision. (50 exp)
- Lady's dressing room found. The clothes and jewellery are very valuable, although many of the dresses are subsequently ruined by the cloth-tearing hands of Lucados Orbrus in the search for red and yellow material. (50 exp)
- Final door on the floor is tested and a woman begins shrieking on the bed of the master bedroom. Crawling along the bedspread, still attached to the woman, is a foetus. The knowledge that it imbues shakes people to their cores and brings a sliver of doubt into Zea's clerical beliefs. (50 exp)
- Lucados finds himself unable to harm the child, though it is eventually killed after its mother is brained by a grappling hook and the foetus is post-emptively aborted. Lucados wears some intestine like a mask. (50 exp)
During the fighting, Jumarak and the new Specialist have gone upstairs and investigate some rooms. Jumarak opens a door to find the bug-possessed nanny weeping over an empty cot, and is attacked by her flailing stinger. (50 exp)
- Meanwhile, the Specialist opens her door and finds a pink, frilly room. She goes over to loot a cuddly toy, and the door slams shut behind her. It's Granny. Snip snip. (50 exp)
- Jumarak falls back, leg stung to shit by the stinger. He punches the bug off the nanny's back, killing her. Stabbington  comes up stairs, attempts First Aid and murders Jumurak. Two for two! Jumurak explodes into tongues which fly into the mouths of others. (50 exp)
- Wei's Specialist is saved by others piling into room, everyone piles down the stairs away from Granny while Stabbington and John Doe follow Alice's lead and swallow the tongues in their mouths. (50 exp)
- Alice, in the lead, tries to bust through the ground level door but finds it locked and impossible to open. Granny cackles, and the party turns grim-jawed towards the door. (50 exp)
- An ambush is set at the door in, as Granny enters she's attacked. A lucky crit sends her flying back towards the stairs. Inside the room, Alice's stomach explodes and releases a heap more tongues everywhere. John Doe and Stabbington immediately induce vomiting to get rid of the tongues in their bellies. (50 exp)
- Granny approaches once more and the oh-shit-I-forgot-about-the-dogs are released, including John Doe's monstrous 20HP beast. (50 exp)
- John Doe grapple-hooks to the ceiling and swings in, walloping Granny with the greataxe. Granny grins as he swings past and her arms blur as she snips and rearranges his body into a new form - head embedded in chest, grapple-leg on neck, other limbs coming out of his back. (50 exp)
- Granny is finally defeated, laughing even as she dies. A great insectoid creature emerges from her body before it fades like a mirage (50 exp)

Session 62 - I'm gonna swing from the chandelier

So it turns out robbing rich people's houses makes you some pretty decent scratch!
And exp, basically everyone leveled up except for John Doe at the tippy-top.

Bear in mind that you only get exp for goods taken from adventure locations, and this horrible house definitely counts as an adventure location. You can totally try to rob non-adventure-locale houses, but most likely won't get exp for anything you loot unless there's some sort of risk to life, limb and/or soul involved.
Also on that front - there's a limit of one level-up per session, just so's you know, but you can get around that limit with Downtime Activities like Carousing.

This Bloodworth Estate place is legitimately the most gruesome adventure I own, so I'm stoked that it ended on such a cliffhanger. What happened here?!
Also - big thank you to David for running an overflow game! And thanks for heading out to grab your stuff from your house! It's good to have a fallback in case of overwhelming demand.
I don't know whether you want to keep it as an overflow game or make it more permanent over time or something, but I'll leave that decision in your capable hands.

And to the newbies who played in said overflow game - I've added you to this D&D mailing list thing in case we don't need an overflow game next time. I'll have your sheets with me anyway!

Session 61 - Attack of the Killer Brain-Bots

An uncharacteristically combat-heavy session! And yet I didn't manage to murder anybody with the murderbots... maybe next time.

Oli / Lulu - I read it right the first time! The rapier does indeed heal you for 1d8 HP when you get a critical hit, even above maximum health (!). Excess health above maximum disappears if your sword resets, but otherwise I suppose you can become some sort of blood-drenched Barbarian horror with a million health.

And for all -
If you're coming to my sickkk birthday party, it's at the following address:
address
Arrive at some sort of party-amenable hour, so any time past 7, really.
Bring booze or, alternatively, whatever it is teetotalers drink. I'll work on having some sort of snacks and oven-based comestibles on hand. Should be good!

Alrighty, that's it from me, see you next week and/or on Saturday!

Retrospective 6 - Evade Content! Build Businesses!

Things are good! The group size fluctuates between four players (which now feels small) and nine (which feels too big).
The lean times are very much over. I feel much more confident about the game's prospects, and my concerns transition from "fuck will I get enough players?!" to the more interesting concerns of "fuck I don't have anything prepped in that part of the map yet".

There's lots of fairly straightforward adventuring after they leave DCO. A fair amount of travel around the campaign map, going into smaller delves, and picking up new players occasionally.
That, and setting up businesses with my then-new Business Venture rules.

The players start setting longer-term goals which was great.
This player-driven campaign thing was really starting to work!
Verbosity of recaps has been growing due to DCO, and stays there for the rest of time. Oh well!

Lots of going into unprepped places, which meant the world kept getting more "real" in my mind.
But also lots of prep that was "wasted" in the short term, as they never used it.
A good thing about running an ongoing campaign of this kind is that eventually, somewhere down the track, they go back. It's nice.

Some weird coincidences with characters though...
- Ollie's dead Cleric was called Zed. Later Charles would create a Cleric called Zea, followed by one called Zan. He was freaked out when he discovered this.
- There was a French Barbarian a year before James Gregory's now-extant French Barbarian!
- The currently-extant Goblin in the game is called Svetnir. A previous Goblin was called Svalborg!
All of these unrelated and unknown to the later players!

Nimrod, who arrived into session 51, was a friend of a friend. Unfortunately he was used to dicking around in railroads, so his character was a zany monk-type Specialist who couldn't talk and was also annoying and shit.
Wow ok, looks like I gave him a 0 exp "Asshole bonus" in the recap and he never returned! I completely forgot. For the best, really.

The death of Fungonius! My word!
We went from four Clerics to none in no time flat. His death was... I guess deserved. His hubris at wanting an ultra-poison sword resulted in his death.
Lulu's still got those maxi-poison crossbow bolts. They're rarely used because they're precious and usually do more harm than good.

Mariana's Halfling annoyed people, I think. I had a soft spot for her because the player was a girl, looked about 12, and was Portuguese. Not a romantic soft spot, you understand, but female players are fairly rare and I didn't want to ruin someone's impression of D&D forever.
Mind-controlling Halfling suited her perfectly. Made lots of pets from bats and wolves and stuff. Always did want to go back and control that roc from DCO.

Leo was this big, quiet dude who played a Cleric also called Leo. I was always a little worried about whether he was enjoying the game because he wasn't so vocal about things as the others. He's the reason I have a sort of hands-off approach to people's fun now, they can engage when they want to.

David was the guy who'd eventually help by splitting the group and running a game himself. He was a good guy, but the sort of guy who's experienced in rulesy late edition D&D stuff so it took him some time to adjust to the "do whatever!" feeling at the table.

Mini Reviews:

Deep Carbon Observatory
The tail end. Very very good.

The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying - Review/Fix here.
A truly shit module, and the worst I've ever run. The publisher put out a new version a few months later, partially as a result of that blog post, which made me feel guilty and also astonished.
The new version's a better, allegedly! I haven't looked at it though.
Also it's free.

The Sleeping Place of the Feathered Swine
Fucking disgusting... in the best possible way!
Lots of gross spurting pus and gunky weird stuff. Cancerous people who turn you into them when they touch you. A big old feathered beaked pig is in there which will ignore you unless you try to steal its valuable cysts.
I totally wasted the gimmick where you print out the bits of dungeon and place them as the party explores because I didn't have access to a printer. A real shame.
Also my name is in it because I helped with torch dice maths! Rolling for torchlight influenced Black Hack's Usage Die, which caused a brief scandal.

Daughters of the Deep
Apparently no longer available for purchase?!
Converted this back in Australia, since moved the location on the map. It's pretty good, mostly for the ideas about body horror mermaids.
Fun fact - I rolled the creepy "mermaids" from this into lovecraftian Deep Ones. This species are what turn a bunch of PCs into breeding chambers in Session 119.

Stonehell
They went back here a fair amount. Good megadungeon, easy to use, easy to reskin, etc etc.
They got to the Asylum level where I had a bunch of mad people in animal masks, probably reskinning something else to make it less generic fantasy than standard stonehell.
A good module, anyway!

Session 60 - Killing Time in the Deep City

Some more of the big dungeon underneath the city was seen this week, and a way further down discovered into an asylum of some sort.

The plan to wreck a ship via false lighthouse and salvage its cargo will probably go ahead next session, especially because Lulu's ship-mounted flamethrower is going to be ready.

Apparently the Ottoman Empire was at its peak during this time in the real world, so conveniently a large trading vessel from alt-Arabia makes sense!
