Session 125 - Abominable Luck


Death comes to those atop the mountain!

After a whole session of fighting their way up Mt Deathfrost, half the party find themselves at the front door in a rocket-powered siege tower pulled by a ton of Subjugated dead while the other half find themselves doing a not-great job of negotiating with a Necromancer before killing him.
On top of that, the vampire king they're trying to find might not even be home today.

The dice roll ever in their favour. For now.



Rule Change Trial:
The d30 can be used in place of a d20, or used to increase any other die by one size.
So like 1d4 > 1d6 > 1d8 > 1d10> 1d12 > 1d20 > 1d30
Because it was brought up that the roll-d30-for-anything thing tends to trivialise challenges rather than create moments of heroism. The other option is to limit the things it can be used for, which would be boring. We'll trial it anyway, and if it sucks we can change it back!

 ---Otherwise I’d never use it: The d30 starts on the player’s side. You can replace any single d20 roll with the Big Purple d30, or expend the use of the d30 to increase any other die by one size. When you use the d30 it goes to the DM’s side. The DM can then use it in a similar way.
Declare before rolling. Anything outside the normal die’s range is a success.
Feed me beer: If you bribe the DM with a beer you can steal the d30 back to the player’s side, even pre-emptively.

- Charles sends: An eastern barbarian is attacked by a floating hand. A chaos burst resulted in concentrated magical energy channelling into the plane of existence, causing the hands to mutate and develop mouths with sharp teeth. Found in an old book nearby Mt Deathfrost, circa 1487, colourised.

Session 125 - Abominable Luck

Campaign Date:
Thursday, 19 May, 1550
Moon Phase: Waxing Crescent
Zodiac: Taurus

New Characters:
- Anticipated, but never showed up.

New Backstory:
- Jack had the worst birthday when the head of his father was presented to him by the ones who'd massacred (emphatically not decimated) his entire clan. (15th May - on this date in the game, in real life, and on your actual birthday, receive 10 gold by some means. Gain exp from this as normal)
- Jade told her prior adventuring party to go on ahead of her and leave her behind in a dangerous dungeon... she was the only one to survive. (While fleeing, can give your flee die to another group)

Enemies Defeated:
- A Necromancer parking warden type (25 exp)
- Just SO MANY skeletons like at least a hundred (1000 exp)
- A bunch of flesh kites (200 exp)
- Masses of skeletal hands (100 exp)
- A black-armoured Necromancer of grim aspect (75 exp)

- Lightweight black-hued Necromantic armour - counts as Chain (100 exp)

Events:

- Most of the group has been huddling in the siege tower for some time, snatching rest when they can. A mass of skeletons waits at a distance. There are whooping sounds from the trees, and occasional shouts can be heard through the rain. (50 exp)
- Jade and Jack find their way in through the crowd of skeletons, banging open the door and dragging themselves in. Cranky Jim chucks a zombie child off the cliff he just climbed, gets into the siege engine, and wrings out his beard. (50 exp)
- After arguing about what to do next for a while, there's a knock at the siege tower door. Outside, a bedraggled guy in Necromantic robes! (50 exp)
- He explains the siege tower is parked illegally, and needs to move out of the way so the bridge can be fixed. Zan says he should be killed, the guy flees! (50 exp)
- Zan sprints out into the rain after him! Tackles him into the mud and starts choking him out! He looks up to see he's surrounded by skeletons, which immediately begin attacking! (50 exp)
- Sophia, Jade and Svetnir run up to the top deck of the siege tower. Sophia sucks down a Last Breath, begins Subjugation! (50 exp)
- Waves of the Dead begin to be affected, falling under her control. It's insane. (50 exp)
- Jade's Magic Missile goes off, exploding the head of the Necromancer being choked out by Zan. He's messy now. (50 exp)
- Skin kites descend upon the siege tower, drawn to the violence. One eats a goblin, others envelop other people up top. (50 exp)
- Whooping from the trees! Jade bugs out with Jack, they begin trudging through the forest up the mountain... before hands grab around their ankles! (50 exp)
- Jade fires off her new spell - Strange Waters - a ball of water containing little fish pops above their heads! Jade's one makes her release an energy burst, blasting the buried zombies! Jack eats one and... becomes one inch high. He takes up station behind her ear. (50 exp)
- Sophia's subjugating these skeletons with abandon! She's got heaps! Svetnir blasts the skies with a flame rune, knocking down incoming skin kites. (50 exp)
- Cranky Jim tries to rope down a flesh kite, ending up throwing it away from the siege tower. (50 exp)
- Jade pops off a Mirror Image and... a head-pounding wall of sound blows over everyone. Suddenly everything is photo-negative, the undead are gone, and Zan is glowing like a ringwraith's true form! (50 exp)
- Confusion reigns as Zan is attacked by many claws - until it becomes obvious that the Dead are merely invisible! (50 exp)
- Lorrick bugs out, following Jade and Jack up the mountainside! (50 exp)
- Everyone else runs into the siege tower, the photonegative undead invisibility pulsing every few seconds and showing staccato scenes of approaching undead. (50 exp)
- Sophia orders the skeletons to form a bridge across the chasm - it totally works! (50 exp)
- Cranky Jim sticks a stick across the stairs, tripping all the monkey-like ghouls that are swarming through the door! (50 exp)
- Zan blasts out a Turn Undead, and most of the ghouls flee! Their old stanky bastard of a leader isn't fazed though. (50 exp)
- Lorrick's met up with Jade and the diminutive Jack. He spiderclimbs (or squirrel-climbs) up the wall, ties up a rope for the others, and hides. (50 exp)
- Jack is put atop a crossbow and does these ones, albeit with Jade's fog demon coming up behind him! He lands in the mud past the curtain wall with a squelch. (50 exp)
- A man in black armour atop the wall booms "ENOUGH!". The photonegative pulse stops, revealing that Jade and Lorrick are surrounded by skeletons with crossbows. (50 exp)
- Down at the siege tower, things are mysteriously quiet. The siege tower is taken across the bridge after a little testing. Skeletons line the path. The tower squeaks along, pulled by skeletons. It is ominously allowed to pass over several bridges and crossbow skeletons in the trees. (50 exp)
- Jade summons an eyeball demon with radioactive teats and rides it towards the gate!!! For like 30 seconds before it disappears in a puff of radiation. (50 exp)
- Somehow her story that she's there on a diplomatic mission from Fate is... believed? The Necromancer guy lets them through the curtain wall gate, and tells Jade, Lorrick and the newly expanded Jack to meet him in a tower in the courtyard. (50 exp)
- Jade tells him that the Siege Tower team isn't with them, so he orders his forces to attack! (50 exp)
- Jade also persuades the Necromancer to let them stay in the castle, Dracula-style. He totally agrees until Jack fucks up a pickpocket. He slams the door and locks it, but is attacked by Jade's smoke demon! (50 exp)
- They blow a hole in the door with a glyph, then Jade fires a hyperpoison crossbow bolt! It hits the Necromancer... but unfortunately it hits the fog demon too! They both detonate in a cloud of doom poison. (50 exp)
- The siege tower group have a plan. The endless hordes of skeletons begin to turn towards the tower... (50 exp)
- Svetnir PUNCHES THE RUNE! A huge jet of energy pours out of the back of the tower, other runes on the sides of the tower are activated to turn the sides to impenetrable crystal! Crossbow bolts clatter off the clear sides as it careens towards the cliff edge! (50 exp)
- We have a minor break where it is decided whether the d30 can be used for unusual on-the-fly things that people are allowed to roll to make it feel dramatic. Tie broken by Andy - it's a no. CHAOS REIGNS! (50 exp)
- And yet somehow it comes up good! Rather than careening dramatically off the edge, it careens, with the help of all the skeletons and horses and other steering mechanisms, straight into the front gate! The front slams down, the party's on top of the curtain wall! (50 exp)
- Meanwhile, a mass of crawling skeletal hands has begun crawling into the room that Team Diplomacy is in! Oh no! They make a run for it! (50 exp)
- No problem for Samurai Jack who gets caught... then just cleaves through the lot of them. So much for that! (50 exp)
- The pursued finally meet back up with the siege tower group, emphatically not telling them why the Dead suddenly started attacking. Shit's got reeaaaal! (50 exp)
