Session 232 - Leap of Fail

Another suicide attempt foiled by good rolls! Will Barrett ever get the solace he so clearly subconsciously desires?!
A trip to Kink is disrupted by a detour resulting from Barrett's insistence that driving through the snow at night without so much as a lantern to see by is a great idea.

Welcome back to Henry who is here for the next few weeks! I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when his particular brand of fire and brimstone meets Snels' similar outlook.

It's Tuesday. The recap needs to go out. On with the show!

Session 232 - Leap of Fail

Date:
15 years after the End.
December-January

New Characters:
- The Witchfound Captain, apparently related to the Witchfinder Captain from many years ago with a penchant for whittling bones that maybe come to life. A little undead.

Character Backstories:
- Witchfound Captain: He tried to save some people from the impending doom of the apocalypse, but they tragically disregarded his advice. When someone disregards your advice, gain a reroll against the fallout.

Characters:

Salvage:
- A large pile of clean grain (3300 exp)
Total: 3300 exp

Events:

--- Barrett’s Awakening
- In the spider temple, surrounded by oddly feminine humanoid spiders, Barrett wakes up on a bed of webs. He remembers the time he should have died, vapourised by the Omnipoison, and his miraculous survival. He’s still got his stuff with him, thankfully.
- In the centre of the cavernous space, suspended in the middle of the spider temple’s webs, is a huge and grotesque spider. It’s the size of a small car and its long legs are fleshy and hairy like a man’s. It’s the spider fusion of Sir Robyn and even has his facial hair.

- Barrett spots his depressed and pathetic original body in another web-bed. He grabs them, slings them over his shoulder, and heads to the exit. He flicks a coin to the spider-babes as he does so, not noticing as they flicker and shimmer back into ordinary spider-priests.
- Barrett is free!

--- Resurrection
- The rest of the party have returned to New Moondin after the events of the previous session. Piles of bones from the destroyed bone giant are already being carted back to the Necromancer Cabal for their use.
- Andromeda swings by Julgoor’s place on the way in, hoping to ask his advice on resurrecting Pearl after she killed her. He’s pleased to see her, but confused by the strong sinless emotion coming off her. It’s grief, of course. Grief is no sin.
- She asks about the River Lethe, the pre-apocalypse means of demon resurrection, and Julgoor informs her that the river is dry. No more resurrections! However, he may have a way…
- Since demon bodies are made of Lethe mud, and demons can grow as they feed, he may be able to sacrifice some of his own essence and combine it with Andromeda’s strong emotions to create a new body for her. It’ll take time, and sacrifice, but it will work.
- Barrett tries to enter during the discussion, and with a single flick of Julgoor’s demonic finger is thrown out of the door. He’s miffed.
- Andromeda agrees to Julgoor’s terms, and they spend the next couple of days in the midst of strange ritual in an attempt to bring Pearl back to life.
- Once the ritual is complete, Pearl is back! She’s about the size of a two year old, which are apparently bigger than I thought. Her mask is way too big for her and her limbs are thick-jointed, but she’s back! Andromeda carries her around in a baby carrier on her chest. V cute. Julgoor himself is somewhat diminished.

- Out of Pearl’s earshot, Julgoor tells Andromeda that her true name is Amarisu. Useful if you need to do demon rituals to her and suchlike.

--- Propaganda
- Grumpy, feeling the political winds changing, decides to spread some rumours to head off the Snelsmen’s ability to form a de facto government in New Moondin.
- He spreads it about that the Snelsmen are working with demons from Kink, and reminds people that the Preppers were devastated in the End War.
- Without Snels in attendance, the political power struggle is put on hold this week.

--- Barrett’s Truth
- Believing himself to be a Lust Demon, Barrett goes to see Julgoor after the resurrection ritual is complete.
- After some strange misunderstandings, it turns out that Hot Barrett is actually being projected from, or otherwise tied to, a small demonic imp. That’s fun. Julgoor doesn’t know how Barrett could become a real boy, or if it's even possible at all. Downsides of being a Perfect Form - you can’t get high or benefit from religion.

- Barrett leaves, somewhat confused. He checks out the papers he grabbed from the barber shop basement and sees that they’re all stories of those who were trapped down there, including his own! There’s also a contingent of Sinners under the cleric Dutchie Roach, all of whom seem to be separately heroically roaming the wastes. Notably, Pearl’s story isn’t in there.

--- Other Admin
- DJ creates an ad campaign based on the titan attack, advertising his new surprisingly expensive ferfect chicken buckets. 1 in 20 contain actual chicken!
- Barrett philanthropically gives out thousands of obols to the people of New Moondin. They know him by name in this town now!
- We check in on business ventures and see Umbrella Corp grow slowly, DJ’s chicken business boom, and his mining business trundle on.

--- January Expedition Preparation: Happy New Year!
- Since there’s all that grain just sitting there in Kink, and there’s been all sorts of weird demon shenanigans going on since they left, the party decides to head out there in the new year. It’s now the year 15 post-poison.
- In the weeks leading up to it, they hear rumours of what’s out there. A guardpost on the way to Kink and some sort of angel beacon pique particular interest, as does talk of a pyramid exposed by a landslide.
- The Clerics prepare Holy Water for the trip, seeing as they’ll likely be facing that Lust Demon when they get there. Barrett uses his newfound immunity to drugs to easily win a drinking contest.

--- January Expedition Day 1: Night Ride
- The New Year rolls round and the team set out on the 2nd, giving themselves a bit of time to shake off New Year’s hangovers. The wagon rolls out into a slushing acidic rain, recent upgrades to the wagon keeping the weather off nicely.
- The snow covers the trails of last year, but the old winding road down to the King’s Road is still evident. Barrett leaps the bridge again - too easy - and the wagon rolls along towards the edge of the Shell.
- The pass out of the shell without incident, depressed original versions of Barrett and Zulu moping away on the floor of the wagon. They pass a trail of decay leading past the rotten corpse of a Stoneshell Crab and decide to leave well enough alone - Grumpy suspects a dragon.
- They also pass by some human bootprints! Some other group must be out in the winter snow! They pass by those too - hoping to get to Kink as soon as they can.
- Night falls swiftly in winter, but Barrett doesn’t care and keeps driving through the night without even a lantern to light the way. The rain gives way to a light snow, softening the rumble of the wheels over the old cobbles of the King’s Road.

--- A Sudden Stop
- The soft clip-clop of the skeleton horse’s hooves stops unexpectedly and the wagon lurches strangely. Barrett, surmising that the wagon is teetering on the edge of a cliff, leaps into action! He grabs his original, jumps onto the skeleton horse, and cuts the ropes that bind it to the wagon!
- He was right - the wagon was indeed teetering on the edge of a cliff. Unfortunately he got the wrong end of the stick - he drove onto the cliff-edge head-on. The skeleton horse was suspended over thin air. Now, with the bindings slashed, it’s no longer suspended…

- He falls along with his depressed original, down and down into a deep pit! For the others, all they felt was a jolt and a sudden scream from Barrett. What on earth is he up to out there? Andromeda lights a lantern and they go to investigate.
- In the lantern light they see a grappling hook fruitlessly whirring into the air above the pit. Zulu shoots it out of the air with her beam rifle, hoping to freeze it in the air, but succeeding only in severing the rope.

- There is a wet crunch from far below. Surprisingly they both survived! Must have been all the mud after the rain! Perfect Barrett’s nose is broken, however, and OG Barrett’s jaw has snapped. Worst of all, the skeleton horse is smashed!
- Andromeda and DJ climb down to assist them. Clerical miracle-healing soothes the pain and bleeding, but can’t fix the broken bones. They won’t be able to heal naturally until their bones are fixed.
- DJ casts Abduct to raise the pair out of the hole. In the cold light of the Abduct beam, they see that the pit is even deeper. The Barretts luckily landed partway down! Abduct brings them just short of the edge of the pit, but luckily the others are there with ropes to pull them up the last few feet.

--- Cook off!
- Seeing as driving at night is evidently a terrible idea, Grumpy has dragged the wagon back from the edge and set up a campsite against it. There are half-stone trees up here. Half made of stone, the other half vanished. Very strange, and not quite like the stone forest they’ve been in before.
- With Grumpy and Zulu in attendance, it’s time for a cook off! Grumpy goes for a “Pitted Omelette” in honour of the near miss, ironically creating a meal that gives a bonus to Piloting. Zulu, as ever, creates something rather more outré with antelope milk, calling it a “Leaping Log”. It grants a bonus to cooking, conveniently enough!

- They bed down for the long winter night, snow falling in soft flurries, blanketing the world in white.

--- January Expedition Day 2: To Kink again!
- In the morning they awaken to the soft rumbling of Thundersnow, and the sound of light hail tapping off the stone trees. They decamp before it gets any worse, hitch Zulu’s antelope to the wagon, and use the half-trees to judge the way back to the road.
- It takes half the day to get back to the road, by which time the hail has really got going and flashes of lightning can be seen flickering through the whiteness. At least it’s light, and occasional squalls blow the snow aside for long enough to see the road.
- Evening comes soon enough - there’s not much daylight in winter. The Thundersnow abates, giving way to a light hazy snowfall again, and letting them see that Kink isn’t so far away now! Only a couple of miles!
- Despite yesterday’s debacle, they light lanterns and Barrett guides the wagon into Kink. Thankfully they arrive without incident as the sun dips below the horizon, heading through the open gates and past the house where they first met Pearl.
- Andromeda tries giving the Void Pet to the mini-Pearl in the baby carrier, and it whirls into Pearl who screams about it hating her! Andromeda quickly takes it away, scolding the void pet. Is it jealous somehow?
- Barrett spent a whole month in this town, so he knows it like the back of his perfect hand. In the lantern-lit darkness, they clatter through the empty streets to the barbershop. He finds the trapdoor and looks down into the room below - empty.
- A joint is passed round those who can actually get high and the room below is inspected with illusion-breaking sight and some raspy coughing. All that’s different is a note written in a scrawling hand that says, “I’ll come back for you, see you soon”. The second trapdoor opens up onto bare earth - it was a ruse.
- They leave, slightly disappointed by the lack of demons to slay, and ride through the darkness to the grain silo. It’s busted and grain is all over the muddy ground, the silo grate was left open and it all poured out! There is some small amount left in the silo though, and they feel safe enough to sort it.

--- January Expedition Day 3: Grain Sorting
- It’s long and boring work, but after a day of sorting through the last of the grain left in the silo they manage to salvage a last 3300 obols-worth. Not so bad!

- There’s another cook-off to finish off, using some of the good grain from the silo. Grumpy makes “Chicken’s Nest” which grants a bonus vs disease. Zulu uses her antelope’s scant milk again to make “Oatrageously Delicious”, granting a bonus to Awareness. The final scores have Zulu's meal as the most delicious! She wins! She rubs this fact in Grumpy's face, who somehow resists declaring a grudge.

- Otherwise safe, and finding the town abandoned by the demons, they rest up in Kink with a wagonful of clean grain. It could be worse!

Events:

--- Something’s Not Right
- Andromeda, DJ, Grumpy, and the rescuees return to New Moondin. As they approach there’s a strange feeling of pent-up energy, like the build-up before a thunderstorm.
- Nevertheless they enter and conduct a bit of town business. DJ takes the rescuees to his chicken shop, feeds them up, and hires them on. They meet up with Red and Damnation Snels, the latter of which has been spending the last few months running his Denialist Brotherhood protection racket with great success.

STONKS

- They hear talk of a string of murders that occurred in their absence. All seemingly randomly targeted, and all victims were killed by hooks…

a fine vintage

- Grumpy immediately declares a Grudge against Doctor Hook and senses that he’s in the Burning Bush pub! That was easy! DJ bemoans how easily this murder mystery was solved.
- The party converges on the pub and Grumpy detects that the good Doctor is on the second floor. DJ climbs to the roof so they can do a cool bust-in-the-window thing… and sees Pearl shooting past in her angel-mech-suit yelling that the demons are attacking!

--- Tower Defence!
- The demons are coming for the pub! Waves come from four directions, and the team scrambles to defend the pub whilst also wondering why the demons are bothering to come here. Is it Pearl? The original Zulu? Or some other reason?
- With a few minutes to set up before the demons come in, DJ chucks some lamp oil in a choke point and Red sets up to duel them when they reach the door. Pearl forms a beam-turret on the roof, covering the road to the south.

- Grumpy takes over the pub kitchen precipitating some disappointed grumbles from the lunchtime crowd, and cooks up a drug cocktail he hopes will dissociate the imbiber so much that they split off from their hot version.
- Andromeda heads upstairs to find Dr Hook - she hasn’t forgotten why they came here. Damnation Snels has a brief chat with Pearl - he’s extremely suspicious that she’s an Envy demon - before heading inside.

--- Against the Demons
- The demons attack! A mix of glossy black imps with exaggerated sexual characteristics and bounding black-masked quadrupeds! Pearl locks down the south road, destroying the waves of imps with beam-fire, while DJ chucks a blunt onto the oil to defend the north and west!
- The imps pop in the flames, but the quadrupeds bound through and begin climbing the pub towards DJ. The flames lick up the sides of the pub, threatening to burn it down again!
- Red stands in the doorway of the pub, fighting off imps and quadrupeds alike, earning her self-given title of World’s Greatest Duellist!
- Something grey and smoky flies out of an upstairs window and lands in a cart across the road - it’s Andromeda’s Void Pet.
- A single quadrupedal demon has managed to make it onto the roof with DJ, and he hammers futilely at it with his ball-peen. Even in this hyper-real dramatic combat zone he can’t hit anything with it!
- Grumpy dives out of the kitchen window and into the street, drawing attention away from Red and slashing in with his rune-glaive.
- A barrel of spirits smashes out of the window into the street and…

--- Against Dr Hook
- As the demons start to attack outside, Andromeda goes door-to-door on the second floor of the inn, kicking each one down as she goes. The first is to the Chieftain Suite where Original Zulu lives in a mire of depression. The next couple are empty.
- When she kicks down the door into Dr Hook’s room, she finds a terrifying scene - an old man strapped to the bed covered in hook-scars, Dr Hook on the ceiling giggling and gloating and then, when he sees Andromeda, disappointed to be interrupted.
- He drops to the ground and starts monologuing, which earns him a hammer to the face from Andromeda! The lightning from her hammer sizzles over him, but he counters her next attack and slashes her in the side.

- Snels charges in through the door to back her up, missing his pistol-shot at close range and getting hook-shanked for his trouble. Dr Hook is a blur, dodging and counter-attacking against their blows.
- With Snels taking his attention, Andromeda heals herself and sics her Void Pet on him! Dr Hook’s too quick though, somehow catching the pet in his hooks and throwing it out the window! It lands in a cart across the street, unhappy.
- Snels uses his Gambit miracle to force both himself and Dr Hook to crit fail! It’s a bad one for Dr Hook, whose hooks are torn clean off the stumps of his hands!
- Andromeda follows up with another hammerblow, smacking him in the face and sending him hurtling back into the wall. The lightning stuns him!
- Together they drag him to the window of the Chieftain Suite and throw him down into the fire. He burns up! No regeneration for you!
- Snels realises he’ll need spirits to firebomb the hordes below and - wow wouldn’t you know it - there’s a barrel of spirits right near the door! They should have seen it!
- He chucks the spirits down into the street and…

--- Michael Bay Bonus
- He fires his gun at the barrel and the explosion is enormous. Grumpy quickly switches his runes to Repel Fire and a glowing field erupts around him, protecting himself and Red from the detonation! Demons are vapourised, but somehow the buildings to either side are only aethetically scorched.
- DJ, on the roof, sees Pearl’s hand emerge from her turret formation with a beam rifle in hand and headshot the demon he was struggling so hard to kill. It turns to dust and blows away.

--- Aftermath
- As the smoke clears, rain begins to fall. Thank goodness! Maybe the pub won’t burn down after all!
- Snels sees his Denialist Brotherhood turn up moments too late. Led by Suffer-Not-The-Demon-To-Live Shepard, this protection racket is here to actually protect people now. Dead people don’t pay the bills, after all.
- Snels is very misogynistic to Pearl who scornfully replies that she doesn’t need his approval. He seems surprised that she doesn’t become a man, for some reason.
- Andromeda suddenly remembers the old man tied to the bed! She runs inside and frees him. He’s very grateful and gives her the few obols he has on him, which she uses to buy him a drink. So lovely!
- Grumpy brings Original Zulu the drug concoction he prepared earlier. He hopes that this potent mix of dissociatives and hallucinogens will somehow sever the link between Original Zulu and her perfect version. OG Zulu isn’t in the right emotional space for it at all.
- She quickly gets locked into a depressed, dissociated drug spiral. Locked deep in the k-hole, scratching at her own skin. Andromeda and Red trip sit, calming her down and keeping her level, while Grumpy starts theorising what extra stuff he should add to the cocktail.
- Just when things seem to be settling down, Zulu screams! An enormous spider is here! It’s true - a spider-priest has arrived to talk to Red. They keep Zulu calm while the spider delivers its message - Sir Robyn is back in the form of a giant spider calling itself Sir Arachnachus.
- Now it’s Red’s turn to freak out. Sir Robyn? Back? Here? The others try to comfort her, and suddenly there’s a flash from outside!

--- Attack on Titan
- Outside, through the dramatically pouring rain, an enormous 10-storey-tall titan can be seen striding in towards New Moondin! It’s enormous, muscles rippling, and its head is incongruously the head of a chicken!

- Pearl blasts through the streets of the town and boosts towards it in a burst of light from her thrusters! The titan’s eyes flash and a beam of energy blasts towards New Moondin, but Pearl is there! She defends with a spinning shield, breaking the beam into multiple smaller beams which explode harmlessly around the town.
- It’s some proper anime shit, and Andromeda rolls up a joint to disbelieve. When it kicks in, the epic battle above fades away, replaced by pouring rain. It’s not real!
- Emergency lighting snaps on across the city, and a warning siren blares out. It might not be real to her, but it sure is for everyone else. Denialists armed with silver weapons and heavy armour fight against the waves of demons pouring in - their weapons are perfect against the threat and despite many close calls they keep getting miraculously saved when the camera pans away.
- With Pearl stuck in the middle of a God of War-style QTE to everyone but Andromeda, the party jog towards the outskirts of town as quick as they can. As they pass Julgoor’s Honey Healing, the demon himself ducks out to ask them what the hell they’re playing at!
- He confirms that Pearl’s an Envy Demon and tells them to get her the fuck out of here. He’s got a hard enough time sharing Greed with Japhet without another demon in the mix. When Grumpy challenges him over this - surely Envy demons don’t compete for sin with Greed Demons - Julgoor claims that a person cannot sin in every direction at once. It’s inefficient.
- Grumpy is extremely irritated when Julgoor makes a comment about him being wonderfully predictable and pretty much only defined by Pride and Greed.

- They set off running towards the epic battle. Andromeda sets her jaw. One way out.

--- Amicicide
- They’re close now. The Titan looms above, Pearl being forced back then recovering and slashing into its regenerating muscle, unable to stop the great monster. Skeletons march in loose formation around its feet.
- Even Andromeda can see it now, although the Titan is bereft of muscle and is instead made of bone. It’s the huge skeleton from the dungeon!

- Red, hearing this, tries to jam her sword into the muscle to test whether it’s “real” to her. It is, and she’s dragged along next to its ankle. From Andromeda’s perspective, it looks like an ankle formed from many many other bones. A skeleton made of skeletons!
- Andromeda finds someone who ran away this session - Pearl! She sees Pearl, wearing no angel-tech armour, furtively scuttling around the side of a building. The others can still see her fighting overhead.
- Andromeda follows and confronts her. Pearl is shocked that she can be seen! She tries to talk Andromeda down, saying that this is all necessary and part of a deal,
- It’s no good. Andromeda shatters Pearl’s spine with a hammerblow, then climbs on top and wraps her hands around her throat. Pearl dies, mouthing "why?".

- Andromeda peels back Pearl’s breather mask and finds a pale pink demon mask behind it. Pearl feels thin and thick-jointed under her clothes. She begins to boil away, turning to grey mist, as Andromeda weeps over her corpse.

--- Illusions Shattered
- With Pearl’s death, the illusion is destroyed. The bone ankle of the bone giant replaces the raw muscle of the Titan, and the top of the giant is lost in the dense rain falling from above
- The lithe androgynous egg-headed form of Singular Thay appears through the rain, asking who killed Pearl and why?? The skeletons around the feet of the giant, real despite the illusions, march in to attack.
- Andromeda comes forward, drying her eyes, and declares that it was her before smashing a skeleton to pieces with her hammer. It’s very effective!
- Snels tries to stab Thay in the head… and it goes right through! Grumpy tries with his glaive and it sticks into Thay’s body, but doesn’t harm them even though the glaive harms everything.
- Singular Thay shrugs and evaporates as the enormous hand of the bone giant slams down on the party - it was a trick to keep them in the way of the hand!
- The huge palm slams down into the earth, crushing skeletons and shattering DJ’s hotbox helm as he leaps away. Snels survives literally miraculously on 1 HP due to his faith.
- Grumpy jumps atop the hand, having taken minimal damage from its fall, and runs up the arm as it rises. Singular Thay projects themselves next to Grumpy as he runs up the arm, trying to talk.

- The others fight the skeletons below, Red taking a nasty shot to the head from the bow-wielding skeletons who have no compunctions about shooting into melee.
- While Snels and Andromeda heal up Red and DJ, DJ uses ABDUCT on the bone giant! It begins rising into the air, bathed in cold light from above!
- The surprise rise throws off the bone giant’s next slap attack and it misses everyone on the ground, thank fuck!
- Andromeda runs back to Pearl’s boiling-off body and finds her obol - a locket that has Pearl’s face on one side and Andromeda’s face on the other.
- Grumpy, running up the bone giant’s arm, manages to reach the shoulder. Singular Thay’s ghost-projection appears before him no matter how many times he tries to kill it.
- Singular Thay doesn’t go into specifics, saying that this was all just part of a deal. All they want is Last Breath and some Necromancer ritual bits they can’t get anywhere else, honest.
- Grumpy declares, “come back when you’re ready to talk like an adult!” and the illusion reels back! What a one-liner! The bone giant tries to brush him off, but Grumpy avoids with a wild rope swing and lands back on the collarbone!

- Outplayed and out-bantered, Singular Thay says “fuck it” and disengages the giant’s skull. The skull flies away into the rain… and once Abduct wears off the whole rest of the giant skeleton begins to fall apart.

- Below, the skeletons begin to flee! They run away into the rain, pursued by insults from the party.

--- Grumpy Falls
- Grumpy suddenly realises that being over 10 storeys up is a terrible place to be when the thing your standing on starts falling apart!
- He falls like a stone, plummeting from above! A rippling corona of plasma blasts up from below, sent by Andromeda, healing him! DJ casts Abduct as he comes into range, softening the fall. Grumpy slams into the mud at less than escape velocity… and survives!
- The giant’s massive bones split and splinter as they fall, scattering into their component bone pieces, a white rain. The party get under cover, and note that this much bone has got to have value to the Necromancers!
- Distantly they see the white shape of the skull flying off through the rain, and a distant voice that might be saying, “this isn’t the last you’ve seen of me, heroooooeees!”

Retrospective 23 - Into the Wastes

This past few months of the game has been, for me, a process of settling into new mechanics and really trying to get into that hexcrawl mindset.
It's kinda working! The essential ingredients were to add in some more rigorous overland travel mechanics, more detailed hexes, and some extra bits around weather and foraging.
Now overland travel is Interesting in itself.

As of right now I'm pretty happy with the refocus! Limiting the party to an expedition per month means that we're already into campaign Winter and the timeline's skipping along. I really wanted to push the timeline forward so we can see civilisation regrow, and that's been working out pretty well!

On the Rebuild:

I feel like the Rebuild mechanics are going well and the hub town of New Moondin has grown nicely. They're sustaining the population through winter at least!
I'll post this up on the blog at some point. Long story short it's an extremely simple worker-placement game. Choices made on the Rebuild map affect the players' purchasing power in the town for the whole season. It seems to work!

My only worry is that it's not table-inclusive enough. This might change if everyone has a pet town to manage, but at the moment there's a smaller core of people interested in doing Rebuild stuff while everyone else buys gear or whatever. I might be overthinking it, but it's a potential issue!

On Weather:

The other fun thing about pushing the timeline forward is the march of the seasons. More specifically - I've been able to try out my many weather charts!
Last session we finally had a death due to weather when someone got caught out in a Gas Front, so hopefully that's put the fear of weather in them.

I'm thinking of weather as the main travel challenge these days. Pre-apocalypse I had encounters with creatures as the main travel issue, but these days almost everything is dead!
They've had very occasional confrontations with weird post-apoc creatures and some random human scavengers, but in the main the real risk has been about the weather and the terrain and what people are going to eat.

My only issue is needing to find a way to fast-forward the weather when they spend a few weeks resting up, but that's no big deal really.

On Encumbrance:

It turns out travelling overland on a very limited hex-by-hex basis means encumbrance is a big damn deal!
The classic trade-off between speed and protection is exacerbated because armour now also weather protection. If your armour breaks, you're exposed to the elements and start taking worse damage.
Plus there's acid rain now which eats away at your gear when you travel in it.
What's an adventurer to do?

They've reacted in two ways.
The most fun one for me is the rise of the Skeleton Porter. Have a Necromancer program a skeleton butler for you and you're off to the races! You can't order them around unless you're a Necromancer, so most have to make do with a simple if/then/else order.
The other solution is quite interesting mechanically. Barrett, played by Tom, has bought an elaborate wagon pulled by skeleton horse and blown by wind. Fun fluff aside, having a wagon as a limited fast-travel option along roads is very cool! As settlements are founded and roads are built, they'll increase their ability to travel around protected from the weather.

On Cooking:

The Cooking Subsystem has been getting a hell of a workout over the past few months!

I really enjoy how cooking a nice meal has become a standard thing to do when they set up camp at night, and the fact that they've been carrying around oils and spices and all the other cooking accoutrements despite the aforementioned encumbrance limitations is a delight.

Part of the fun of it has been the randomised basic ingredients available in the hub town. Each month we roll to see what they've got available, and if they're lucky there'll be stuff available to cook a favoured meal.
If the town ingredients were guaranteed every month I'm sure we'd see the party go back to the same meals for consistent bonuses, so randomising heads this off a little bit.

The other side of the coin is that foraged food is set per hex. That is - find a certain food there one time and you'll always be able to find it again. That way if they really need Ferfect Chicken for a dish, they can take a trip out to the Ferfect Chicken area and forage for it!
This kind of means that foraging is more difficult but more consistent, while hub town ingredients are easy to get but unreliable. I think that strikes a nice balance!

On Parry:

We've got a proper Fighter for the first time in a while in Red, and we're seeing the true power of the Fighter Parry!
Basically they get +4 to AC and if missed by a melee attack, the Fighter gets a free counterattack against the target. The end result is that our resident Fighter gets a bunch of attacks per round when surrounded, which is pretty cool!
It certainly feels swashbuckly, and it's super effective against swarms of weak enemies which is exactly where the Fighter is meant to sit vs the Barbarian. Success!

On the Wild Hunt:

Something real cool that happened was I finally had an opportunity to unleash the Wild Hunt on someone.
The idea that the Wild Hunt comes for you if you eat an Elf heart has been in the game for over half a decade, and it finally happened!

There was an unexpected interaction with the "one Expedition per month" thing, since the Wild Hunt was originally to be a looming nightly threat and that doesn't play well with rolling the timeline forward rapidly.

It kinda worked out in the end with a bit of handwaving.
Essentially the Wild Hunt is an "Elves fall, everyone dies" deal, and so poor old Jasmine found herself alone and outclassed fleeing not one but two flavours of Wild Hunt.

Each species of Elf has a different way of hunting. For instance the Flitting Gads (Featherfall Elves) try to spook you into the open where they can send razor-sharp butterflies to tear you to pieces, and Brackenfrau (Charm Person Elves) charm ordinary folk against you and watch them hunt you like dangerous game.
Jasmine was being hunted by both, so it was quite the spectacle!

This just so happened to coincide with some Carousing consequences, so we had a "The Hangover" session where the main party was trying to piece together just what happened the night before, while occasionally flashing back to Jasmine's desperate struggle against the Elves.

She didn't make it, despite giving it a jolly good go.
Part of the gimmick was that you can't use the same hiding spot twice - the Elves will find you if you try the same trick again - and that's what happened to Jasmine.
It didn't help that she'd filled her extra-dimensional hidey hole with razor butterflies either...

Mini-Reviews

I did a fair bit of reskinning for most of these, so these reviews aren't entirely reflective!

Modnar's Cellar
I reskinned this from a relatively generic wizard's tower into some sort of non-euclidean space that Elves broke into a decade or so ago and killed the main guy.
Somewhat explored, it's a fairly generic dungeon but solid.

Stonehell
Say whaaat? Yea I broke out the Stonehell again because I needed a valley with caves and the opening bit of Stonehell was just the ticket.
Extensive reworking meant I pretty much just used the map... but whatever Stonehell's great. If you somehow don't have it yet, worth a purchase.

Crashed Seraphim
I won't link this because I don't trust my players enough! Cool gimmick, I'll link one day.

Ruinous Palace of the Metegorgos
How did this forest of living trees come to grow in the post-apocalypse? Weird pregnancy shit, that's what!
Short dungeon accessed via a forest of sad zombies who cry at you. It would have been harder to find said short dungeon, but player bullshit (tm) solved that little issue!
Exacerbated the general sadness and loneliness by having all the treasure turn to stone when you kill the main boss, because that sucks and life sucks and everything sucks.
Banger of a module though. Led directly to a character having their cock turned to stone and indirectly to him having a coin-operated cock that needs to be paid to pee like it's a London tube station loo. Good times!

Kink
A thing I made up myself for once. Go me!

Flesh for the Witch Queen
Linked even though I don't trust my players enough (pls don't read!), I vaguely remember using this in an earlier age. Anyway, reskinned and double-reskinned in the time since.
Cool but relatively linear dungeon, fun serial killer baddies, and a lot of room to add extra bullshit.
Good times for a one page dungeon!
