Session 272 - The Black Rose

I can't really believe this, but Ratman the Ratman is now Level 8.
64 rats at a time! Iconic.

Not one but two Big Treasures were found this session, precipitating a rapid rise up through the ranks. Good work!

Also Ollie grants us an exclusive look at Scarlet Eclipse, the boy out of time.

Session 272 - The Black Rose

New Backstory:
Scarlet Eclipse’s mother was threatened by an ancestral vampire enemy. Scarlet Eclipse and a band of muscular friends went on an interplanetary adventure to defeat him and his champions. +2 to hit vs more powerful enemies.

Loot:
- Potion #168
- Potion #269
- Stygian Rose (10 000 exp)
- Black Rosé (18 000 exp)
- Fine Wine (100 exp)
- 7 gilded birdcages (700 exp)
- 10’ of chain
- Two baggies of Alterket
- Small frog statue (80 exp)
Total: 28880 exp
Foes:
- 6 bats (30 exp)
- The Marble Knight (750 exp)
Total: 780 exp

Events:

--- Into the Mines
- Underground in the Stygian gardens, we begin with the gang in the underground shed room.
- They grab a few gardening tools and swiftly unlock the secret door to the south, coming out into a hidden laboratory. A map and a bronze acorn are on the table, along with several potions. All are taken.
- The map shows a plan for a dig site, and the acorn allows one to speak with intelligent plants! Red takes the acorn to see the talking tree from last session, and basically discovers that the tree-talking puzzle got short-circuited by Beepbox’s powers.
- They head down into a dig site, conveniently enough. Snooping around gets them to a few apparently-collectible pickaxes and an area with some barrels and a strongbox.
- Beepbox tries to open the box, but it’s no good. He takes long enough that horrible sulphurous fumes suffuse the area! They run out with the lockbox and take shelter in the stairwell back up.

--- Batty Old Woman
- They wait it out and go back in, coming face to face with the ghost of Abelia Prem! She confronts them about the theft of her rose (despite, in fact, holding a rose) and the ruckus brings forth bats!
- Red kills the bats.
- They continue and soon find a hole down into depths unknown with a distant pale light. Spoopy.
- They go down the fairly steep flume and come out into an area with a bunch of well-preserved Dwarf corpses.

--- The Rats and the Rose
- Scarlet Eclipse skulls a potion and engages Past Sight, seeing what happened to these Dwarves. They fell down the flue when it collapsed and they all died, except for one who went further in.
- They follow the shade and see him collapse at the edge of a pitch black river, hammer falling from his hand.
- In the present, there’s a rosebush with a single black rose growing at the edge of a black river. Experimenting with the river via rats reveals that it sucks anything that touches it into its depths.
- The rose is plucked, taken by Red as a hair ornament. Some vials of the dark water are taken via Unseen Servant - it hurts living flesh.
- Also found is a hammer tangled up in the briar. It’s made of skin drawn over metal, a little hairy, and warm to the touch. Yuck. Ratman claims it.
- They also try putting some of the bloody water from the tree room above on the bush. It accelerates the growth somewhat.

--- Wine Knight
- With time to spare, they explore more of the place. A side tunnel of the dig site is found to contain a smaller tunnel marked “now we drink” in Dwarven. As they’re deciding what to do, the sulphurous fog starts rolling in! They decide to escape down the smaller tunnel!
- Ratman’s well-suited to the rathole, Jeremy uses a cantrip of Flesh Goop to get floppy enough to fit, Scarlet Eclipse makes do, and Beepbox drinks what he thinks is a Potion of Diminution. Unfortunately it’s a Potion of Delusion and he only thinks he’s small!
- Shenanigans occur, some people get gassed, and they get to the end of the tunnel to find that it’s a sneaky way into the wine cellar!
- They hunt around for some expensive wine and, in a 1/100 chance, find the most expensive wine in the entire place! It’s Black Rosé, created from the grapes that grow upon the black rose bush, and extremely rare. Rumour says it was intended for the Pope.
- Celebrations aside, booming footsteps are heard! It’s the Knight they’ve been warned about!
- Red drinks a potion with a muscle man on it and finds herself incredibly strong! It’s a Potion of Giant Strength baby!
- Red’s incredible strength gives her insane anime powers, and despite Ratman accidentally shooting Beepbox and Beepbox’s delusions of shortness, her ludicrous attack bonus soon brings victory!
- In the aftermath, wine from smashed bottles glugs across the floor and a no-longer-deluded Beepbox celebrates the kill he definitely made by throwing a rat at the statue while small.

--- Old Father Toad
- Using the last of the super-strength, they run about smashing down doors. One corridor has busts with greenery growing out of their heads as hair. Another has gilded cages with songbird skeletons within, which Jeremy swipes into Hammerspace.
- They came across a pool of stagnant water with a big domed window above. Ratman lobs a few rats in and they are pulled underwater one by one. He throws in the rest of the rats, and they die horribly, crying out “whyyyy?!”
- Two big froggy eyes pop out of the water, followed by a big froggy face with a seaweed beard. He calls himself Old Father Toad, and he lives here.
- The party toss him some stuff, and he gives them gifts of his own in trade. Some chain, a small statue of a frog, and some Alterket. Apparently he loooooves ket and can barely feel his tongue, which is odd when you’ve got a tongue as long as his.
- They leave the drugged-up toad and head back to Shrub-Nigeria’s place with no problems on the way. A very successful trip!

Session 271 - Court in a Web of Intrigue

Spiders, trees and legal terminologies!
Deeper into the strange garden, a fight with spiders in and out of court, a new goat friend, and a surprisingly friendly dryad.
See you tonight!

Oh and Ollie gifts us this version of post-COVID Red with rad new mask. Hell yea!

Session 271 - Court in a Web of Intrigue

Loot:
- A golden chandelier (3000 exp)
- Book #394 - POWERLAD Untamed (100 exp)
- 4sp, 20cp (6 exp)
Total: 3106 exp
Foes:
- Three very big spiders (750 exp)
- A goat statue (25 exp)
Total: 775 exp

Events:

--- Spider Persecution
- The party enters the web-laden dining hall and looks up to see clusters of unblinking eyes, shining in the glow of Jeremy’s Light spell! The spiders chatter amongst themselves - fresh meat!
- Beepbox leaps forward, gun ready, and is assaulted by the spiders due to his dress sense! The spiders attempt to web him and one gets thrown into the wall, while another succeeds and drags him into range of a spiderbite! Only his shield saves him from the venomous sting.
- A melee ensues, Red’s classic parry technique leaves her hurt by a spider’s venomous crit, Beepbox continues to wrestlemania the spiders’ webs, and Jeremy Wizard unloads a powerful Magic Missile on another.

- The party decide to nip back through the door to limit the spiders’ options. Red and Beepbox unload beams downrange as others slam the door shut. From within they can hear only one voice - a spider who mourns for his dead brethren.
- Red distracts the spider by shittalking while the others sneak round the corridors to a door on the other side of the dining room. They kick the door down and unload on the poor grieving spider!
- Red hears its screams and has a sudden change of heart, throwing the doors open to let it run out to safety… then tries some true bullshit!

--- Spider Prosecution
- Red cuts her palm and summons forth… a spider lawyer! They begin discussing the spider’s grievance while the rest of the party smash through the door, flattening Red against the wall!
- The legal spider projects an electrical field to prevent the murderous party members from breaching client/consultant confidentiality, and Scarlet Eclipse counters by summoning forth his own spider-lawyer. It works!
- A legal battle ensues!
- Prosecution says the party murdered his brother. Defence says it was self-defence. Evidence is given - spider corpses weighed against the signs of struggle.
- The spider judge rules in favour of the party! What an upset! The last spider is put into multiple pairs of handcuffs and led away to infinity prison. Justice is served.
--- Classic Downtime
- The lower the golden chandelier from the spider room and carry it back to Shrub Nigeria’s house via the mirror, deciding to spend a bit of time with some classic admin adventures.
- Jeremy Wizard and Scarlet Eclipse spend a full 8 weeks swapping spells between each other in case of future badness while everyone else gets high with Shrub Nigeria and his stoner Iounian mates. Time well spent!

--- The GOAT
- On their return, they find themselves face to face with the ghost of the old lady clutching the black rose. She tells the gang a rambling story about how she came to be obsessed with this rose, and how she hired a team of seven Dwarves to help her dig for it.
- She comments on Red’s familiar dress and heads upstairs to go find the one she’s got that’s just like it. The party move on and keep exploring.
- Inside a ballroom, Red is suddenly assaulted by a stone goat! She tries to wrestle it, it escapes, and then charges again and gets wrestled to the ground. It brays an apology and they chat for a bit, Red calling it out for not actually needing to eat the grass it was pretending to eat.
- The goat seems pretty chill now actually and tags along. Red is, obviously, thrilled.

--- An Ancient Tree
- The gardens are pretty cool and open enough that the party can see quite a few areas of interest scattered around. They’re first drawn to a stand of trees surrounding a large hole, another larger tree is growing inside a large chamber below, its leaves poling up out of the hole.
- They take the stairs down and reach the underground chamber. Beepbox casts his Universal Translator miracle and speaks with the tree. It speaks slowly, tells him it was grown hundreds of years ago by long fast men in this stygian garden, and hasn’t been sacrificed to in many many years.
- Giggling cherubs can be heard from above, and Beepbox tells the tree enemies are coming! The tree tells them to go, it’ll protect them! It lashes out at the cherubs with razor leaves and the gang head through a door, deeper into the underground garden…

Session 270 - Red Mirror, Black Rose

Man, can you believe it's been 10 sessions since we were forced into remote gaming? That's over three months! And here's me hoping that it'd just be a stopgap for a few weeks until we were all allowed back to the pub, alas.

This means I'm well behind on Retrospectives so I'll have to get on that!

Anyway this was a real fun session mostly because I got to go all out on funny voices and silly effects. Next time... spiders??

Foes:
- A cherub statue (100 exp)

Total: 350 exp

Events:

--- Haunted Mansion
- After the events of the chocolate factory, the party decides to check out this mysterious red-hued mirror they found last session. It indeed leads somewhere mysterious - the entrance hall of a battered old mansion.
- Tattered scarves flutter from the shoulders of statues of nude women, the windows look out onto an endless plain of black grass, a grand staircase leads upwards and mumbling words can be heard coming from the landing above. Scattered around a couple of small trolleys are countless chocolate wrappers that crunch under their feet.
- They ignore the routes leading off from the ground floor and take the stairs up, following the mumbling. They investigate some statues and soon meet the ghost of an old woman clutching a black rose to her chest.
- Red puts on her invisibility gloves and talks to her for a long time, since the old woman tends to ramble and Red has no idea about social cues. There is something about roses and how she tended them as a youth.
- After a long time rambling, an arrow flies from somewhere! Jeremy and Scarlet see it coming, pulling compatriots out of the line of fire with them, but unfortunately leave Ratman standing exposed! He is hit with the stone arrow and promptly starts making out with Jeremy, to the chagrin of both Jeremy and Ratman’s rat legion. Yuck!

--- The Cherub
- They crawl to see what shot them and see a stone cherub giggling on the floor of the entrance hall below. It fires again but hits itself, causing it to engage in vigorous self-love.
- The party leaps into action! Ratman falls off the top floor embarrassingly, but Jeremy and Red’s joint action swiftly leads to Red pinning it in a wrestling chokehold.
- They try to talk to it, but it’s stupid and treachorous and allegedly only half a minute old. They smash it to bits.

--- The Wild Man
- They explore further and, listening at some double doors, hear some muttering from the room beyond. They bust in and find a mad bearded man in woman’s clothes leap from a four-poster bed and yell at them to get away!
- He’s been hiding from the cherubs and devouring the chocolate from the entrance hall after escaping from the chocolate factory through the mirror. Scarlet Eclipse recognises the man as the recently-thought-lost Vermillion Vest! Another bullshit George-brand character save!

--- Unfortunate Vomit
- They explore another room, finding a green room with a nice garden out the window and statues of men reading. They grab a couple of books they find on the desk and leave, though they do notice the statues shift position to be more comfortable.
- Red goes back to check out the balcony that overlooks the estate, shouting to see if there’s anyone out there. A gargoyle above her vomits acid onto her, then looks mortified and apologises profusely. He can’t help it! Also he tells her to be wary of spiders.
- Everyone but Beepbox decides to dress up in lady’s clothes in the hopes that it tricks the denizens of the mansion into thinking they’re not a threat. It’s all very fancy but rather out of date fashion-wise.
--- Snakes and Spiders
- Appropriately enough a giant spider takes the opportunity to smash through the window and charge at Beepbox! It tells the “ladies” not to worry, it’ll deal with the intruder. The ladies’ protestations that Beepbox is just their robot golem fall on deaf spider-ears, and Red manages to kick it back out the window. They get out of the room asap!
- Ratman sends rats to explore the next rooms in case of spider. One has a little servant’s quarters and dumbwaiter. Ratman sends a rat down, but when it comes back up there’s a vine growing in there. Except it’s not a vine, it’s a snake! It bites Ratman but he feeds a rat to it and it chills out, saying “thank you”.
- Beepbox heals the poison and they move on, finding a laundry room. There’s a chirping sound but Ratman’s rat finds the culprit - a small mechanical cricket. Neat!

--- Chores
- A bedroom has a stone woman in one corner, and a raggedy toy lion under the bed. Beepbox gives her the lion and she’s happy, a small golden lion popping out the back of her neck! This minor puzzle results in much of the rest of the session, wherein Beepbox completes household chores in the hopes that it unlocks more goodies. To be fair, it often does!
- He makes the bed in another bedroom, creating a safe space to sleep. He organises the bookshelves in one of the rooms, and sends a ration down the dumbwaiter. Dressing the nude statues downstairs in travelling clothes seems to make them happy too. How lovely!
- Upper level explored, they head downstairs and find themselves in a library full of crumbling books. Many are seized.
- Across the hall, there is a sitting room with windows shattered from the outside. They grab an ivory smoking pipe and mess around with a statue that defends the room from the outside with stone bow and arrow.

--- Anyway Here’s Wonderwall
- Further through the house Jeremy Wizard finds a conservatory with chairs facing a golden harp. He tries to play something on it but fails! A statue with a conductor’s baton points it at him, and he’s ensorcelled to play a beautiful harp rendition of Wonderwall! Red saves him from an eternity of Oasis.
- A last look into a large dark room. Jeremy Wizard conjures a Light, and sees the whole place is full of webs. He looks up into shining red clusters of spider eyes. Cliffhanger ending!

Session 269 - Lucia the Boss

A clash with Lucia leaves many fighting for their lives, but thankfully some classic spell abuse and a good dose of bullshit lets the gang escape with their lives and loot intact! Also a mystery mirror that I need to make up a place for it to lead to, but that Red Moon is a good bet.
Session 269 - Lucia the Boss
New Characters:
- Scarlet Eclipse’s father had a dangerous job - space farming on a death planet in the outer rim of colonised space. All he wanted to do was to help people. +1 to selfless acts.

Loot:
- 5000 space bucks
- Chocolate recipe book (1000 exp)
Total: 6000 exp
Foes:
- A bunch of beanos (200 exp)
Total: 200 exp

Events:

--- Chocolate Chaos
- Lucia stands before the chocolate river, an army of bean-man oompa-loompa guys at her back. She wields a rapier and her syrupy armour has returned! Before her, Beepbox and Jeremy Wizard have just burst through the door, and up near the ceiling besides the pipe that used to spew forth a chocolate waterfall, Red, Vermillion Vest and Ratman the Ratman look down in upon the scene.
- Beepbox boosts up to a pipe near the ceiling, getting into a sniping position, and fires down at the enemy.
- Vermillion Vest fires a microwave gun at Lucia, melting off the syrup armour, while Red runs in to hug Lucia to calm her down and Jeremy lobs oil onto one of the thin bridges crossing the chocolate river. Vermillion lights it up with his microwave gun, burning some beanos! They retreat out of the fire, screaming.
- Jeremy takes blowgun fire from the beanos, getting hit with one and injected with their stun poison. Lucia breaks Red’s hold and kicks her into the river, then follows up with a critical strike on Jeremy Wizard!
- Red bursts from the scalding chocolate and attacks Lucia, taking her attention away from the fallen Jeremy.
- Meanwhile, up on the pipe, Ratman and Vermillion run inside to try to get the turbine moving again. They find themselves in a room of hostile bean-men and retreat again.
- Red kicks Lucia into the river, screaming “see how you like it!” and it becomes clear that the beanos can sing an oompa-loompa song to buff Lucia, regrowing her syrup armour and preventing damage from the boiling chocolate.
- This leaves Red open to spammed with darts, and she takes an alarming number of crits from the little guys. Her jump-armour is destroyed and she passes out. It’s looking dire for Red.
- Another rousing round of Oompa-Loompa buffs, this time from the unharrassed beanos on the right, empowers Lucia with an insane jump! She bursts from the river and goes straight for Beepbox, who is still clinging to a pipe!
- Jeremy shakes off his stun and wild-casts Draw Aggro on his bee! All the enemies, including Lucia, suddenly fixate on this evil bee and chase after it. Thankfully Vermillion Vest arrives on a boat at just the right time for everyone to escape!
- Beepbox heals Red and they bundle her chocolate-covered body onto the boat. Vermillion Vest stays behind to throw off their pursuers... and give a ludonarrative reason for Scarlet Eclipse to conveniently show up.

--- Escape via the Gift Shop
- Scarlet kicks the boat into high gear and they sail down the chocolate tunnel and into the bowels of the building, coming up through the boiler room so they can do a cheeky theft on the way out.
- Red tries a tune on the piano lock and it opens, despite releasing a gas! Thankfully she saves. Inside, Beepbox tinkers the lockbox open, finding some space-bucks and a ruined recipe book.
- Lucia arrives and confronts the thieves! While Beepbox nicks the mirror and Jeremy crams the loot into his bag, Red grabs a potion from Jeremy and smashes it on the ground, turning it ethereal! The others escape as she slathers a salve of immateriality onto herself, letting her walk through Lucia and away.

--- Run Home
- They escape the factory, Red strolling out with no problems as a distraction as the others sprint out from the other side.
- Soon they’ve returned to Shrub-Nigeria’s house with all their stuff in tow, and Jeremy and Scarlet Eclipse spend a couple of weeks researching Mending to cast on the ruined book.
- Two weeks later the gang has bought a bunch of new stuff, and after casting Mending on the recipe book Shrub Nigeria is stoked! The recipe for chocolate so he can make his own edibles! Wonderful! - Notably, Red buys a new suit of heavy armour. It turns out all Shrub Nigeria's items are banana-themed, so Red's bananararmour is here!

- Beepbox speaks to the stolen mirror and discovers it’s a portal to some other place, currently unknown. How very mysterious.

Session 268 - Let’s Split Up, Gang!

A multi-directional split-party competition for who can cause the most shenanigans leads to a standoff!

Session 268 - Let’s Split Up, Gang!
New Characters:
- Vermillion Vest, a Specialist allegedly doomed to die.

Loot:
- Valuable brooch (250 exp)
Total: 250 exp
Foes:
- Just loads of bean people (500 exp)
Total: 500 exp

Events:

--- Dining with Lucia
- The party turns up at Lucia’s factory at the appointed time, and are greeted by Lucia herself! She leads them inside to a well-appointed dinner party, everything served by little cocoa bean-headed guys.
- Beepbox feigns a toilet break as an excuse to sneak around the guest quarters, netting a valuable brooch and some fancy lady’s clothes. Others, making conversation, discover that the mysterious Red Moon behind the real moon is some sort of Red Elf blockade preventing Earthlings from going to space.
- The dessert is in another room, and they are led out and into a proper Willy Wonka chocolate river room! Vermillion gulps from the river and becomes addicted to chocolate! He bites at the head of a bean man and jumps into a boat on the river, Ratman jumps in in an attempt to save him!

--- No Way of Knowing
- The pair wash down with the chocolate river, hearing the dismayed shouts of Lucia behind them.
- They travel all the way along it using Vermillion Vest’s piloting prowess, but when they reach a bend there’s Lucia herself waiting for them, angrily firing her pistols!
- Luckily for them she shoots herself in the foot! Ratman lobs a couple of rats at her on the way past and Vermillion splashes some hot chocolate on her as they surge forward.
- They zip round another bend and soon find themselves about to run into some big paddle wheels! Oh no!
--- Beepbox and Jeremy’s Adventures in Sabotage
- Meanwhile, upstairs, the other three have just seen Lucia run off to deal with the boat thieves. Beepbox and Jeremy deal with the guards, while Red activates her invisibility cloak and scoots off down another hallway.
- Beepbox and Jeremy explore some more rooms, tipping bean-men into vats of boiling chocolate in the creamery, and blowing up some sort of dangerous machine in a room that flows with chocolate.
- After their sabotage they nearly get caught in a bean man ambush, but escape with yet more shenanigans leading to yet more deaths by boiling chocolate!
- They run out into the chocolate river room again… and find out that Lucia is there waiting for them, and she’s angry! Oh no!

--- Red Fucks Around and Finds Out
- Red, dashing off down strange passages, finds herself peeking into a room with a massive cocoa tree and a bean-man village. She checks a different door and sees a bunch of bean-men on a tread-powered wheel.
- She causes confusion with invisible pranks, then goes into the massive chamber with the big tree and starts shooting into the crowds of innocent beanos.
- Blowdart rains around her and some sort of bean shaman tries to ensnare her with Web, so she blasts out of the room and nips down the tread-mill hole to the chocolate river below, conveniently stopping the whirring machine just in time to save Vermillion and Ratman’s boat from certain destruction!
- They slip out onto the top of the chocolate waterfall in time to see the confrontation between Lucia, Beepbox and Jeremy Wizard below.
- Cliffhanger!
