Session 180 - These Violet Delights Have Violet Ends

Man, this was a long one! Lots of sleuthing, lots of talking to people, mysteries solved that lead to other mysteries.
Phew!

With POWERLAD becoming a new high priest and inheriting a massive hoard of treasure, Carter's new Goblin has just ascended straight from level 1 to level 5 which is wacky as hell. I guess we can rationalise it in-fiction as the goblin character showing up at a high level with an entourage of goblin minions already at their disposal?
Not sure if I should go back to the original "maximum of one level per session" rule or not, but I guess rapid levelling isn't the end of the world (ha). One backstory per session remains though.
Condolences to the people that missed out, but there's plenty of cash for carousing now at least!

Since we're a few sessions into the various entangled mysteries around the Boat Race in Moondin, to the extent that poor old Andy showed up and was completely lost, I'm going to summarise some stuff.
Essentially there are a lot of different threads twisting together. Here are some of them.

Some facts
It's the end of the world.
Moondin is a town in crisis. It is one of a few population centres remaining in the country, and possibly the world.
Everyone in the town worships, respects, or at least pays lip service to the great green Apocalypse Dragon Ninhursag in the centre of the city.
The central dragon-worshipping Drakencult is made up of five factions, beneath the main cult of Ninhursag Undivided are sub-cult worshipping individual aspects of Size, Plants, Magma and Crystal. Each faction is led by a high priest.

The Boat Race
A boat race has begun recently, purportedly the 35th annual boat race although nobody remembers this happening before. Those who win the race receive fabulous prizes. Seven victories in a row entitle the winners to a single Wish.
The Plant Priestess Sylvia Flora publicly supports the boat race, and by extension the demon "Flower Liches" running it.
You have: raced a few times. Two wins and one loss due to a mid-race death.
You have: found out that Sylvia Flora is here against her will. Something fishy is going on there.
You have: been invited to dinner by a two-headed demon.

The Poison Scientist
The Drakencult's primary objective was to create a poison powerful enough to prevent the apocalypse.
Head poison scientist Isen Heisenberg has disappeared. He thought he'd created a poison that could save the world, instead he wiped out a third of all plant life and given the world-ending tentacles some sort of cancer.
You have: discovered that he's hiding in an underground complex
You have: teamed him up with the spider demon Arach-Nacha, whose powerful unnatural poison will assist him in fabricating the ultimate poison.

The Spider and the Dragongirl
Not to get into too much backstory, but there's a girl who loves POWERLAD because he killed her husband... who was a POWERLAD from another timeline.
The girl, Andromeda, believes that our POWERLAD is destined to be her husband.
In Moondin she made a deal with a spider demon of lust. Andromeda let the demon use her body, and in exchange the demon was to make POWERLAD fall in love with her.
The demon lied. Instead she got engaged to POWERLAD's creepy elf friend who writes erotic fanfiction about POWERLAD.
You have: saved Andromeda from demon possession.

The Disappearance of Magnus Grossman
One of the most vociferous opponents of the Boat Race was Magnus Grossman. Leader of the Size-worshipping faction of the drakencult.
He disappeared soon after.  The Crystal Priestess Christina Breaker suspects foul play. She plans to achieve apotheosis and take revenge against those who killed him - the other leaders of the Drakencult.
You have: had POWERLAD take up Magnus' mantle as high priest of the Size faction.
You have: discovered that the demon-possessed Andromeda murdered him in a lovestruck ploy to make POWERLAD happy.
You have: told Christina Breaker who really killed Magnus - Arach-Nacha the spider demon.
You have: discovered that you have less than a day before Christina achieves apotheosis, whatever that means. If you can persuade her of a worthier target, she'll destroy that instead of the drakencult.

- I mean it's a bit complicated...

Kitty gives us another excerpt from one of POWERLAD's romance novels this week:

"Where did you say you were from?" POWERLAD asked, as his strong fingers began to untie her breeches. "Clunge," she sighed, tracing her fingers over the contours of his chest. "What a coincidence," breathed POWERLAD, "That's exactly where I'm headed."
- From POWERLAD and the Gypsy Princess

And finally, happy birthday to Ratman!

Events:
- We come in off the cliffhanger! POWERLAD lands to find his wife Bertha is standing on the library steps, telling him that they've found the body of Magnus Grossman. He was the missing leader of the Gogamogic Drakencult, and he's been murdered! (50 exp)

- Sir Robyn and Violet float alight from their flight just after. In POWERLAD's powerful arms, Andromeda murmers peacefully. Bertha is taken aback, but waves the group inside. (50 exp)
- To the surprise of everyone, Carrie Meleste chooses this moment to show up! She's been in the Red Light Protectorate for the last however long, and arrives on a suspiciously stained throne carried by four submissive slaves. (50 exp)
- Entrance handwaved, Andy spends most of the session trying to work out what's even going on here. A murder? Boat races? Dragons? It's been a while! (50 exp)
- Elena is called to look after Andromeda and the party heads to check out the corpse. They found it near the bins at the back of the library. (50 exp)
--- CSI: Moondin
- It's not pretty. Magnus has been dead for a couple of weeks at least, his corpse bloated and rotting and chewed on by vermin. He was under a pile of rubble and trash, fairly well hidden. (50 exp)
- Claw marks down the front of his chest are the apparent cause of death, although when Violet surreptitiously tries to grab his hand for the corpse bag she notices a couple of huge raised welts on his wrist. (50 exp)

- They're familiar welts - the sort that might be caused by a giant spider bite. Violet takes the hand anyway. Waste not want not, right? (50 exp)
- His body is searched. Apparently the killer didn't bother, because he's got some small change, the keys to his manse on the dragon island, and a rare tasty confection from a far off land worth a huge 550sp. Dude had a sweet tooth! (50 exp)
- After some bickering over how to transport the body, POWERLAD hefts him onto a shoulder and lifts him down to the cellar. They find a fairly cool room for him where he won't damage the books. (50 exp)
- Violet introduces herself to Bertha and asks if she can check out her Necromancer spellbook. All ok! The others discuss next steps. (50 exp)
- It's early evening, but time is of the essence, so it's decided to head to Ninhursag's island in the middle of the magma lake and see what the heads of the drakencult know. Onwards! (50 exp)
- Violet's study session is cut short, but she'll be able to Read Magic her new friend's spellbook tomorrow. Right...? (50 exp)
- They head off, POWERLAD flying them over the magma river, and travel through the Drakencult-controlled part of the city towards the centre. On the way POWERLAD is convinced to give some fans a sermon on the Dragon, which he does! (50 exp)
--- The Head of Ninhursag
- The magma lake, in the light of the fading sun, is truly beautiful. Great crystal trees emerge from the orange glow, connected by hanging vines. The great green head of Ninhursag sways above the island in the centre, the huge eyeless shape wreathed in poisonous gases and lit by the bubbling lava below. (50 exp)

- Lesser mortals would have to traverse the vine bridges or row across on crystal boats, but POWERLAD is no lesser mortal. He spreads his wings and carries his charges across the magma lake! (50 exp)
- Violet is dropped off at the entrance to the poison labs before POWERLAD banks round to land on the central island. Brandon, the leader of the Magman Drakencult, comes to meet them as they land. (50 exp)
- Sir Robyn turns up around this point. Apparently he's been here the whole time and uncharacteristically quiet! Mysterious. (50 exp)
- Brandon asks if POWERLAD is here to take up their offer of becoming the new High Priest of the Gogamogic Drakencult. He's respected and a celebrity, maybe he can bring the Gogamogic faction to heel? (50 exp)
- POWERLAD agrees! Garlock the head priest is extremely pleased! Despite not being jazzed at these outsiders being here, they quickly bring POWERLAD to the head of NInhursag to have him invested with authority! (50 exp)
--- Violet Nearly Ruins Everything (Part 1)

- Violet enters the crystal tree, the poison lab can be seen on the floor above. She's greeted by a drakencultist in a lab coat, who is confused as to how she got here. (50 exp)
- She asks for some poison that will kill somebody quickly and peacefully. When asked why she should get this stuff for free, Violet tells him that she met with Isen Heisenberg and he said that she could just come here and grab some! (50 exp)
- The cultist is immediately laser-focussed on Violet. Where is he? What's he doing? Why did he send her? (50 exp)
- Violet tells everything she knows. Where Heisenberg is, what he's doing, that he's got a demon spider helping him. The works. After all, she's not a drakencultist. There' nothing proscribing her from leaking secrets. (50 exp)
- Best of all, she's got a note from Isen Heisenberg himself! Look! It says that she can grab whatever poison she wants! (50 exp)
- The note is worthless, but in thanks for all the information they supply her with a big jug of poison that will send someone into a dreamless sleep before they die. She leaves as the scientists begin plotting to hunt down their former employer. (50 exp)
--- POWERLAD ascends

- The ceremony is on. There is lots of chanting and beseeching to the swaying head of Ninhursag. Its toxic fumes sting the eyes and nostrils. The huge head swings down, eyeless earth rune face somehow still staring straight into POWERLAD's soul. (50 exp)

- All at once, POWERLAD feels the weight of this creature of elder aeons upon him. The skin on his forehead cracks and blisters, the earth rune spreading under the skin. The ceremony feels like it's over quickly, but this indelible mark will be with POWERLAD forever. (50 exp)
- Garlock is pleased that Ninhursag has accepted a new high priest! He leads POWERLAD and his friends to Magnus' abandoned manse. It's his now, along with all its contents. Of course, they haven't got the key since Magnus took it with him when he disappeared. (50 exp)
- POWERLAD busts the door down with his huge muscles. For some reason the first things noticed are the rich furnishings, the huge gold table, the chests overflowing with tribute... (50 exp
- Oh yea and the place is fucking trashed. Easily and obviously the scene of a bloody struggle. I should have led with that. (50 exp)

- There's a hole in the roof upstairs, a bunch of dried blood all over the place, and different footprints in the blood. Some normal human feet, some extra huge human feet, and the hand-like prints of a demon spider. No bodies to be seen. (50 exp)

--- Violet Nearly Ruins Everything (Part 2)
- Violet enters, jingling Magnus' door keys, wandering why someone bashed down the door when they definitely found these earlier. (50 exp)
- Garlock's eyes go wide, realisation hits. They murdered Magnus! So that POWERLAD could take over as high priest! He and Brandon yell out for help from their honour guards! It's time for revenge! (50 exp)
- Sir Robyn tries to explain but Violet protests, "We just found the body in the streets! Look, here's his hand to prove it!"
- Sir Robyn sees this with dismay. There's no way they're getting out of this one. He dives into the library. Violet shuts the door and presses herself against the wall. Garlock breathes in a deep breath, about to breathe his draconic breath weapon!! (50 exp)
-  POWERLAD hears the noise and comes running.  From the upper level, Carrie Meleste casts Command! Her voice rings out, the spell targeting Garlock - "Hiccup!" (50 exp)
- Garlock's breath catches in his throat, he hiccups, and the choking gas of his breath goes everywhere in a great cloud around him! Brandon the magma Dwarf is caught in the blast, staggering out of the cloud coughing and choking! (50 exp)
- POWERLAD opens the door at that exact moment. The roiling greenish cloud of chlorinous gas blows through the door, blinding and choking him and Violet! (50 exp)
- Violet staggers into the next room and collapses against the table. Sir Robyn, from the floor, uses a Force of Forbidment cantrip to create a bubble helmet around POWERLAD's head! (50 exp)
- Carrie Meleste forces the reinforcements to a momentary stop with a horrifying story of childbirth, while POWERLAD sees the indistinct shape of Garlock unsheathing claws and throwing up an obscuring cloud of dirt! (50 exp)
- POWERLAD's vision clears as he defends himself against Garlock's attacks, but his throat is still too red-raw to speak. There's one chance... (50 exp)
- POWERLAD swaps a spell to Message and smacks it into Garlock's head. "Give me a minute to explain! We can prove we didn't kill him!" (50 exp)
- Against the odds, it works! Garlock withdraws and allows the gas to clear. Brandon struggles to clear his throat. (50 exp)
- "Alright then, explain." (50 exp)
--- Sir Robyn throws Violet under the bus... and POWERLAD's driving.
- The party gather outside, surrounded by a number of high-bond Drakencultists. Several head into the manse to observe the crime scene. Garlock apologises to POWERLAD for jumping to conclusions. (50 exp)
Sir Robyn clears his throat... time to get technical! Using a Phantasmal Force cantrip, he starts showing "photographs" of the crime scene. It's vaguely plausible. Maybe. (50 exp)
- The lab coat-wearing scientists from the poison lab turn up and ask to talk to Garlock. Oh shit. The story starts falling apart as soon as they tell him about the info Violet told them about Isen Heisenberg's location. (50 exp)
- POWERLAD tries to explain away Violet's info away as lies, but it's a really fucking bad excuse. Only one thing for it. (50 exp)
- "Actually, we only met this girl today. No idea how she got the keys and the hand! We don't even really know her!" (50 exp)
- "So she DID kill Magnus!" shouts Garlock, turning to Violet with wild accusatory eyes. "You're too trusting, POWERLAD! She clearly did it!" (50 exp)
- Violet is about to spill the beans. Where the body is, when they found it, how they got the hand, more details of their meeting with Isen Heisenberg... (50 exp)
- Sir Robyn realises that she's about to incriminate all of them. He's only got one choice... (50 exp)
"How could I be so blind!" he says as he takes out his pistol and shoots Violet right in the hip.(50 exp)
- She's still up, so POWERLAD follows up with a textbook SLEEP SLAP! Violet falls unconscious in just one hit, slumping to the ground. (50 exp)
- "Thank goodness we caught the murderer!" says Garlock, "That was a close one!"
--- Disposing of the Evidence
- Violet is brought before the great head of the dragon Ninhursag. Garlock beseeches the dragon and its vast face curls down. (50 exp)
- Sir Robyn has one last defence. He can't lose a client! He declares that he has a Mind Reading potion, with which he will be able to declare an insanity defence! (50 exp)
- The insanity defence is worthless. Now they're going to kill an insane murderer instead of just a murderer. Even better! (50 exp)
- A last-ditch attempt to cast Invisibility on Violet and simultaneously create a Phantasmal Force body double is foiled - drakencultists can see heartbeats. (50 exp)

- Ninhursag opens its maw wide. Earth is drawn up towards its mouth in a continual stream, pulling Violet into its great maw. She is drawn past the huge teeth and between its terrifying jaws, which closes with inexorable force. (50 exp)
- Timothy eats Violet's spellbook as penance, Sir Robyn takes full responsibility. (50 exp)
- Garlock is relieved. He really truly didn't want POWERLAD to be the murderer. POWERLAD's his only chance of bringing the Gogamogic Drakencult back into the fold. (50 exp)
- POWERLAD declares that he will personally investigate the lying killer's information about Isen Heisenberg. No cause for concern. Yes yes what a terrible misunderstanding. Easily done. Ha ha no collusion here no of course not mystery solved thank goodness. (50 exp)
- Since the Gogamogic Drakencult are now allegedly under POWERLAD's control, he says it's time to go off to see if they'll listen to him. The ulterior motive is to head to see Christina Breaker and have a chat. (50 exp)
--- Christina Breaker
- They arrive at the part of the Drakencult zone that the crystal boat racers specified way back when. There is indeed someone to meet them here who can take them to Christina's hideout. (50 exp)
- Long story short for those listening at home, the Crystal and Size factions of Ninhursag's cult broke away from the main cult after Magnus died and the suspicious boat race began running. (50 exp)
- On the way in, POWERLAD tells the Gogamogic drakencultists he sees that he's their new high priest, and he's going to find a way to heal the drakencult's internal schism! (50 exp)
- Christina is found meditating in a room overgrown with crystal. Her crystal wings have grown into the walls and ceiling, most of her lower body no longer flesh. She speaks in crystal harmonies. (50 exp)

- POWERLAD speaks out against the demons and the boat race. It's extremely suspicious, and Sylvia Flora the Plant Cult leader is clearly being held against her will. (50 exp)
- Christina blames the leaders of the drakencult for Magnus' death. Sylvia and Magnus were the most vociferous opponents to the demons being allowed to set up the boat race, and now look at them. (50 exp)
- When questioned about all this crystal madness, Christina says that she's close to her apotheosis. She's going to become an Avatar of Crystal and take revenge against the traitorous Garlock Beendigung and all who stand with him. (50 exp)
- It seems Christina had a close relationship with Magnus and is convinced that the jealous Garlock had a hand in his murder. POWERLAD counters, saying that the murderer was a rival drakencultist and/or a spider demon.
- Christina is willing to change her mind, but she can't turn back the clock on her crystal apotheosis at this point. POWERLAD has 24 hours to change her mind and redirect her wrath towards the real killers. (50 exp)
- The party take their leave. It's late, midnight late, so they fly off towards the library once more. (50 exp)
--- Late Night Interrogation
- They arrive at the library. POWERLAD wakes up Bertha, he's got important questions. (50 exp)
- Most importantly - was there anything strange about Andromeda's heartbeat when she arrived? Bertha answers - "No, but it changed soon after. I didn't think anything of it, dragon magic you know." (50 exp)
- They awaken Andromeda who's been put into proper pyjamas and tied to the bed. She no longer has her wings. (50 exp)
- When questioned she says she flew here so that she could find "her" POWERLAD, the POWERLAD she just knows she's destined to be with. (50 exp)
- Shortly after she arrived, she met the spider queen. Arach-Nacha promised that if she willingly gave over her body, together they would be able to win POWERLAD's heart. (50 exp)
- Arach-Nacha didn't follow through on the deal. Instead getting engaged to that filthy elf Galaxy Johnson and feeding on Andromeda's unrequited lust. (50 exp)
- "I thought killing the dragon priest would impress you and help you become the new cult leader! Then you'd love me!" (50 exp)
- When asked if she'd be willing to testify in a court of law - "I didn't do the real killing! That was the demon! Not me at all!" (50 exp)
--- Back to Christina
- In the wee hours of the morning the team wing their way back to Christina Breaker's hideout. (50 exp)
- She's still awake, still meditating. Above her head the crystal is knitting together into the shape of a dragon's skull. (50 exp)
- She is incensed to see Andromeda, spawn of the dark dragon Ereshkigal and murderer of Magnus at her own admission. She tells Christina the whole story, how she was possessed by Arach-Nacha, how it wasn't her that did the deed. (50 exp)
- Christina wants to know where she can find Arach-Nacha to take revenge. POWERLAD says he'll find out and let her know. "21 hours, POWERLAD!" warns Christina. (50 exp)
- On the way back, Sir Robyn ensures his spider kids are down with his new Delivarachnid service and asks them to weave him some web armour. "Sure thing, Dad!" say his kids. (50 exp)
